Location details and information
Grassdale Hunting Club sits on the historic Grassdale Plantation, originally settled in 1819 and still owned by descendants of founder John Coleman. The property spans approximately 4,000 acres in Greene County, Alabama, combining large hardwood bottoms, hay fields, mature pine plantations, and scattered clear cuts—all actively managed for timber and wildlife.
Grassdale runs a selective harvest program designed to produce mature bucks. All members are required to take pictures of harvested deer at the club's measurement bar to verify they meet minimum standards:
| Area | Minimum Points | Inside Spread | Guest Fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trophy Areas (North of Co. Rd 12) | 8 points | 14" minimum | $50/day + $250 legal buck |
| Controlled Area (South of Co. Rd 12) | 8 points | 12" minimum | $50/day, no buck fee |
| Non-Controlled Area (Off Co. Rd 12) | 6 points | No requirement | $50/day, no buck fee |
Illegal bucks carry $300 fines and count as 2 of a member's 4-buck annual limit. Two illegal bucks in one season can result in membership loss.
Membership Costs: - New member dues: $3,700/year - Returning member dues: $3,200/year - Family memberships: $6,300/year - $500 initiation fee for new members - New members: 3-year probationary period
Hunting Tags: - Deer Season: 2 tags per membership (not transferable) - Turkey Season: 1 tag per membership - Members must take mature deer—preference for 3.5+ year old bucks
Guests can visit anytime except opening weekend, Thanksgiving week, and Christmas week. Restrictions: - Limited to 2 visits per year during deer season - 1 visit per year during turkey season - Guests harvest 1 doe and 1 buck per deer season; turkeys must be gobblers only - Guest fees due day of hunt: $50/day plus fees for legal harvests - Members have priority choice of hunting areas over guests
Members and their children (with supervision) can take culls—extreme culls, 6-point bucks with 12-14" spreads with no visible brow tines. Does not count against the 4-buck limit unless the buck doesn't qualify as a cull. A three-person committee (Tom Haney, Alan Anthony, Jim Kent) determines cull eligibility and can classify older bucks as legal based on jawbone examination.
Harvest Requirements: - All jawbones must be removed, numbered, and placed in wire basket on front porch - Jawbones collected by February 15—$25 fine per missing jawbone - Photography required for antler measurement at club bar - Deer mounting through taxidermist still requires jawbone submission
Club Conduct: - No shooting game from roads - Alcohol prohibited before and during hunting (violation = expulsion, no refunds) - Gambling prohibited - Members responsible for removing their own jawbones and guest tags

Grassdale has been managed by the same leadership for 25 years. The club's mission is to provide recreation for members and families in a morally positive, family-oriented atmosphere while conserving and improving the deer and turkey populations. Many children have grown up learning to hunt safely and understanding the importance of protecting and cultivating the land and wildlife.
The club prioritizes member enjoyment over guest revenue—members always have priority choice of hunting areas.
