The NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course is designed to introduce new shooters to the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely and responsibly. This comprehensive training provides a solid foundation in firearm safety and marksmanship, making it ideal for first-time gun owners as well as those seeking structured instruction to improve their shooting abilities.
Participants will learn about pistol parts and operation, ammunition, and the fundamentals of shooting. Emphasis is placed on safe gun handling, range rules, and the NRA’s three fundamental rules of gun safety. Classroom sessions are combined with hands-on practice and live-fire range exercises to reinforce safe handling and build confidence.
Upon successful completion, students will have gained the skills needed to safely handle, load, and fire a pistol, and will receive an NRA completion certificate. This course also meets prerequisites for more advanced NRA training programs.

Firearm safety rules and responsibilities Pistol parts and operation Ammunition knowledge and storage Fundamentals of pistol shooting (stance, grip, sight alignment, trigger control) Shooting from a bench rest and two-handed standing positions Cleaning, maintenance, and storage of pistols Live-fire range practice under instructor supervision Duration: 8 hours (classroom and range time) Prerequisites: None—this course is open to all responsible individuals, regardless of prior experience
