Greg Dykstra didn't start Pistol Wrangler LLC until 2019, but his credentials came from three decades with the Phoenix Police Department. He spent 14 of those years as a police firearms instructor, testified as an expert witness on firearms cases in Arizona, and knows Colorado firearms law inside out. When friends and family started asking for serious training, he and JoAnn launched the business.
Pistol Wrangler focuses on pistol and revolver instruction through a structured curriculum:
$275 per student ($50 non-refundable deposit; WCGBA members get $25 off)
This 2-day NRA-endorsed class covers: - Firearms safety fundamentals - Proper shooting grips, stances, and sight alignment - Revolver vs. semi-auto pistol familiarity - How to select a handgun for your purpose - Ammunition types and selection - Legal issues and firearm cleaning
Classes are limited to small groups for personalized instruction. It's recommended you take this before buying your first gun.
8-hour class: $150 ($30 non-refundable deposit; WCGBA members $130) 2-hour renewal: $75
This is the state-mandated 8-hour training for Colorado concealed carry permits in 2025. The class now includes a written exam and practical shooting evaluation. Topics include: - Firearms safety and handling - Situational awareness and mindset - Physical and psychological effects of high-stress deadly force situations - Colorado and Federal gun laws - Legal ramifications of using deadly force
All 2026 concealed carry classes meet on Saturdays: February 21, March 28, April 25, May 30, June 27, July 25, August 29, September 26, October 24, November 21, and December 12

8-hour course covering: - Firearm selection for home defense - Shooting positions and use of cover/concealment - Emergency family planning - Police contact procedures - Legal ramifications
Requires proof of firearms proficiency or completion of Basics of Pistol Shooting. Bring your own firearm, belt holster, 150 rounds, and magazines.

8-hour intermediate course with: - Advanced shooting positions - Reloading and malfunction drills - Cover and concealment tactics - Decision-making under pressure
Prerequisite: Firearms proficiency or Basics course completion. Bring 200 rounds of ammunition.

8-hour advanced course building on intermediate skills: - Multiple target drills - Advanced shooting positions - Tactical and stress reloading - Decision-making in defensive situations - Legal aspects of defensive firearm use

4-hour sessions for beginner shooters to practice fundamentals with direct instructor feedback. Try different firearms, review shooting skills, and cover firearm-related topics. Limited to 4 students per session. Requires completion of Basics of Pistol Shooting.
In-House Corporate Training — Greg can bring training to your business for employee safety instruction, customized to your needs.
Realtor Safety Training — As a former police detective, Greg has investigated violent attacks on lone female realtors. He provides specific education on avoiding becoming a victim, threat recognition, and survival strategy planning.
All classes take place at various locations throughout the Pagosa Springs area. When you sign up, you'll receive specific location details. Classes are scheduled upon request—register at least two weeks in advance to receive study materials and test information ahead of time.
Small student-to-instructor ratios mean hands-on, personalized attention in a no-pressure environment. Dykstra emphasizes the four cardinal rules of firearm safety:
1. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded 2. Never point a firearm at anything you don't intend to shoot 3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot 4. Know your target and what's beyond it
