GunStoke teaches the NRA Basic Pistol Course—the most common and state-accepted certification for Connecticut pistol permits. They've trained over 4,500 students and focus entirely on beginners who want safety, confidence, and actual competence with firearms.
This isn't a lecture disguised as training. You'll shoot approximately 50 rounds from at least four different quality firearms:
Class structure varies: Weekend classes run 9am–3:30pm (single day). Weeknight classes split into two evenings: 6–9:30pm and 6–9pm. Either way, you're done shooting by mid-afternoon and you can go home.
Many permit classes bounce you between a classroom and a public range—which means waiting, distractions, and wasted time. GunStoke keeps you in a professional, climate-controlled classroom with visual aids and AV equipment. The dedicated range space is 3 miles away—no hanging around a public shop.
"I took this class four years ago with a police instructor. After a few hours of stories and a class I didn't really understand he took us to shoot. I shot 6 bullets out of a revolver and that was it. I was too nervous to even apply for my permit. I am so happy I decided to try again and found your class. Mike teaches in a way that everyone can understand. I can't wait for my permit so I can get my gun." — Madelaine H.
The NRA's research is clear: classes with too many or too few students don't work. GunStoke keeps classes to 5–10 students whenever possible. That's small enough to get real attention, big enough to learn from other people's questions.
You bring your driver's license/state ID, appropriate shooting clothes (no low-cut shirts, no open-toed shoes), and optional snacks.
Accepted by Connecticut and many other states. Single-day weekend or two-night weekday formats.
Connecticut residents are eligible for Utah's nonresident permit, which allows you to carry in at least 35 states in conjunction with your CT permit. Utah-only classes run about 4 hours with no live fire required. This is popular because it's low-cost and the application process is simpler than other states.
Get both CT and Utah certifications at a discount—the cheapest combo rate in Connecticut to their knowledge.
Important: You must have a CT permit to carry in Connecticut. A Utah permit alone won't work here—but together they give you reciprocal carry in 35+ states.

Want to teach? GunStoke runs a structured path:
1. Pre-Qual Session (30 minutes, $100 deposit): Prove you can handle and shoot at the required standard. If you pass, the $100 applies to the course fee. If you fall short, you get $50 back.
2. Basic Instructor Training (6 hours): Learn NRA training methodology that applies to any NRA course.
3. Basic Pistol Instructor Training (10 hours): Discipline-specific content that prepares you to teach the Basic Pistol course. Plus deep dives into Connecticut's specific permit process and firearm ownership laws.
The full course typically runs longer than the NRA's minimum 16 hours—they want their instructors to give comprehensive training.
Step 1: Get an Application Visit your local police department and request a pistol permit application. Ask about fingerprinting schedules. If your town has no police department, contact the State Police barracks serving your area. Non-residents call DESPP at 860-685-8290 for a packet.
Step 2: Take a State-Accepted Class GunStoke teaches the NRA Basic Pistol Course—the standard. You'll learn knowledge, skills, and attitude for safe firearm handling. Classroom instruction, hands-on training, live fire on revolvers and semi-automatics. They'll also review your application so you understand every field.
Step 3: Apply at Your Police Department Bring: - Completed application (GunStoke will notarize if needed) - Copy of course completion certificate - Copy of driver's license or passport - Proper payment - Show up during fingerprinting hours
Processing takes up to 8 weeks.
Step 4: Temporary Permit to Permanent Permit Assuming approval, you'll get a 60-day temporary permit. This only gets you to the next step—you can't carry or buy firearms with it. Take it to DPS Headquarters or a State Police location (listed in your packet) to be photographed. You'll then receive a 5-year permanent permit.
Step 5: Carry and Purchase Your permanent permit entitles you to purchase and carry any firearm legal in Connecticut, plus any ammunition. No waiting periods. No purchase limits. No frequency restrictions on how often you can buy.

GunStoke emphasizes what most permit classes skip: the actual learning environment. Think about why you'd choose one class over another:
GunStoke's instructors focus on beginners and build proper foundation skills. If you're looking for advanced tactical training or SWAT stories, that's not here. This is about safety, fundamentals, and becoming proficient. That approach works: they've trained thousands of first-time shooters who then confidently got their permits and bought their own firearms.
For Nervous Students: Being nervous or inexperienced is not a problem. GunStoke structures everything for people who've never touched a gun before. Information is presented simply and kept engaging—no overcomplicated jargon.
