PITA Don Young Memorial Shoot
October 6 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
The History of PITA & Its Impact on Idaho
At the present time the Boise Gun Club holds a number of trapshooting events that are sanctioned and registered with the Pacific International Trapshooting Association (PITA). The PITA was formed in 1931 to give Western shooters a bigger voice in their sport and Idaho was a charter member.
The PITA has about 4,000 members with state or provincial associations in Alaska, Arizona, British Columbia, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. The PITA keeps shooters records, selects an All-Star Team, and puts on the Grand Pacific Championship shoot each year. They also have special shooter awards and special memberships for Youth shooters and new PITA members. For more information on the PITA, go to: shootpita.com
The core of the PITA is the state and provincial associations. The Idaho State PITA schedules and organizes PITA shooting events in Idaho. The state association is run by a seven person board of directors which is elected each year at the Idaho State Shoot. The Idaho PITA writes the program for, and puts on a state shoot every year. They award special Idaho shooting recognition pins and pay for ½ of any new member’s first year dues. They also help gun clubs with running PITA registered events.
The Boise Gun Club held the first seven Idaho PITA state shoots and since 1931 has hosted the state shoot over 20 times.
Young Family Memorial Shoot in Memory of Don, Henrietta, and Steve Young
This shoot began as a Memorial shoot to Steve Young after his very sudden passing in 2005 and Henrietta and Don were included over the years. The Young Family was a big supporter of the Boise Gun Club and trapshooting, helping with many of the improvements done at the club over the years.
As a young boy Steve worked at the club as a trap-boy and later developed into a very good shooter. One of his major wins was at the Grand Pacific where he fired a lone score of 99 in one of the big handicaps. Don won the High-Over-All championship at the Idaho PITA state shoot in 1962 and then stopped shooting to raise a family and build a business (Don Young Construction). He returned to shooting later in life and competed and contributed in many ways. He was inducted into the Idaho Trapshooting Hall of Fame in 2006. Don also served several time on the Boise Gun Club board including as President. Henrietta had been an athlete in her younger days and she supported her family in all of their shooting (and other) activities and often traveled with them to shoot and gun club activities.
The 15th Annual Young Family shoot will be held October 6th, 2019. The program will included 100
