Full description and what we offer
Firearms Training Academy operates out of Davie, Florida and serves the entire South Florida region—Broward County (Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Coral Springs, Plantation, Pompano Beach, and 20+ other cities), Miami-Dade County, Collier County (Naples, Marco Island), and Monroe County (Key West, Marathon).
They're an NRA training center focused on two things: certifying new firearms instructors and providing student-level training across multiple disciplines.
The NRA Instructor Training Program teaches you how to teach others using official NRA lesson plans and methods. This is performance-based—you don't pay and automatically pass.
Program structure: - Basic Instructor Training (BIT): 6 hours, mandatory for all instructors. Covers teaching methods, organizing courses, using training materials, and how to deliver instruction effectively. - Discipline-specific training: 5-14 additional hours per discipline (Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, Muzzleloading, Personal Protection, Reloading, Home Firearm Safety, or Range Safety Officer)
Total course length varies: - Single discipline: 11-20 hours - Three disciplines (rifle, pistol, shotgun): At least 40 hours
What you get: - NRA Trainer's Guide - NRA Instructor Candidate Packet with course outlines and lesson plans - Student packets including handbooks, certificates, and NRA Gun Safety Rules brochures - Follow-up support and materials to teach your first courses
Certification requirements: - Minimum 90% score on instructor certification exam (85% for assistant/apprentice) - Must demonstrate organizational and teaching skills through practical exercises - Passing the course doesn't guarantee NRA recommendation—the Training Counselor evaluates your knowledge, skills, and attitude - Initial certification valid for 1 year; renewal available for up to 3 years at a time - NRA encourages at least one basic course taught per year to stay active

For those pursuing security work, they offer: - Florida Class "D" Security Officer License Course - Florida Class "G" Armed Security Officer License Course - Florida Armed Security Officer "G" Requalification Course
Beyond firearms training, they also provide: - Criminal and civil investigations - Executive and personal protection services - Background checks - Missing persons investigations - Surveillance services - Expert witness testimony
Pre-course assessment exercises may be required to verify your firearm background before instructor training begins. The academy strongly suggests completing the student-level course before instructor training, even when not a prerequisite.
The NRA Instructor Training Course is designed specifically to teach you how to teach others—not to improve your shooting skills. Possession of basic firearm safety and shooting skills is a prerequisite. The first day of most instructor training courses consists of the mandatory 6-hour Basic Instructor Training (BIT).
Processing fees are payable directly to the NRA upon course completion and vary based on which and how many courses you attend.
