Mid Pacific Pistol League started at the dawn of practical pistol shooting in 1982. The club's founding directors—Randy Santos, Richard Wheeler, David Soon, Teddy Madden, Richard Abe, and Leighton Ogawa—were pioneers who shaped competitive shooting in Hawaii. When MPPL incorporated as a non-profit, the board expanded to include Buster Ahlo, Keith Kawamoto, Kelvin Kawate, Robert Loui, Glen Nakamura, Ian Onaga, Greg Shigetani, and Nyle Warinner.
The club's mission is straightforward: develop practical firearm application and safe handling while building good sportsmanship and citizenship across Hawaii. They host regular matches at Koko Head Shooting Complex—the only venue shooters need to know for competitive action in the islands.
MPPL runs three main competition formats:
Specialty matches rotate throughout the year: Monster Match, Classifier Special, Turkey Shoot (rifle only), and one-off themed competitions keep the schedule fresh and draw different competitor pools.
MPPL hosts matches nearly every Saturday, with 15-20 competitions annually. The 2025-2026 schedule includes State Championship matches, Aloha State Games, and specialty events. Check their website and Practiscore for current dates and registration.

First-timers don't need to know USPSA rules before showing up. MPPL runs IPSC 101 courses before each match that teach:
You'll be paired with a "big brother" during your first match—an experienced shooter who answers questions and guides you through stages.
Required: - Eye and hearing protection (absolutely mandatory) - Legally registered, properly functioning handgun (minimum 9mm/.38 Special caliber) - 150 rounds of ammunition - Holster made for your gun - Belt worn in belt loops - 5 extra pistol magazines or equivalent speedloaders (high-capacity magazines are illegal in Hawaii) - Magazine/speedloader pouches - USPSA member card (sign up online before your first match) - Gun in a case, unloaded - Empty magazines
Strongly recommended: - $25-35 match fee (bring cash or card) - Food/drink for 5-8 hours - Sunscreen - Closed-toe sneakers or boots - Rain gear (Hawaii weather) - Baseball cap or visor - Work gloves (helps with setup/breakdown) - Range bag
Safety first: You'll be instructed exactly where and when to holster your gun and load magazines. Until then, everything stays in your case.
Koko Head Shooting Complex is the venue for all MPPL matches. From Waikiki, take the first left as you enter the complex to reach the IPSC/Action shooting ranges. MPPL provides detailed directions on their contact page.
