Don Fritz operates a specialized long-range shooting school from his facility on Bobcat Lane near Lewiston. Fritz grew up shooting under his Marine father's guidance, got his first rifle at 12, and spent seven years in the Air Force before returning to civilian life. He became obsessed with long-range precision shooting, eventually building custom rifles capable of consistent hits beyond 1000 yards.
The school focuses exclusively on precision rifle training, with courses designed around small class sizes and intensive instruction. Fritz developed his curriculum after years of teaching friends and their friends how to shoot at extended distances. His facility overlooks the Snake River Breaks and Craig Mountain, providing both scenic views and practical shooting environments.
All courses include rifles, optics, suppressors, ammunition, lodging, and meals - students just need to show up.
Fritz offers four distinct courses, each limited to 2-5 students:
The school provides all shooting equipment built around high-end components. Rifles use Impact Precision actions with Timney Calvin Elite triggers and Osprey Barrel Works barrels made by Patriot Valley Arms. Everything sits in MDT ACC chassis systems for adjustability and accessory mounting.
Optics include Nightforce and Vortex Razor scopes and spotting scopes. All rifles run Thunder Beast Arms Corp suppressors to reduce noise and recoil. Support gear includes Two Vets "Recon" tripods, Eberlestock backpacks, Vortex Razor rangefinders, and shooting accessories from Armageddon Gear and Cole-Tac.
The range offers multiple target distances with steel targets. Students can engage targets from various positions and angles to simulate real-world shooting scenarios. The facility includes classroom space for ballistics instruction and equipment familiarization.
Each course begins with classroom instruction covering fundamentals, ballistics, and environmental factors affecting bullet flight. Students learn about wind reading, barometric pressure effects, angle compensation, and ballistic applications. The curriculum emphasizes understanding the math behind long-range shooting rather than just memorizing data.
Range time progresses from basic fundamentals to advanced techniques. Students work on trigger control, recoil management, system setup, and reading environmental conditions. The hunting course adds scenario-based training with natural barricades and improvised shooting positions. PRS courses include timed stages with multiple targets and position transitions.
Lodging is provided on-site with views of the surrounding landscape. Fritz and his wife prepare home-cooked meals for all students. Evening discussions often continue the learning process as concepts settle and new questions arise.
Courses run $1,200 for two-day programs. Students must purchase ammunition separately, with round counts typically ranging 250-300 rounds depending on the course. The PRS course requires rifles capable of 1 MOA accuracy at 100 yards, with threaded barrels for suppressor use. Recommended calibers include 6 Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6 Dasher, 6 GT, and similar cartridges not exceeding 3200 FPS.
Booking requires advance scheduling due to limited class sizes. Students can bring their own equipment or use the school's gear. The facility accommodates both beginners and experienced shooters looking to refine their skills.
"Don's ability to teach what seems complicated gets delivered in a way that is easy to comprehend. What's also nice is after the shooting is over you can still ask questions at night over dinner." - Chris Costa
