Full description and what we offer
The Blue Grass Council is not a firearms retailer—it's a youth development organization operating as part of Scouting America. Based in Lexington, Kentucky at 2134 Nicholasville Rd (Suites 3 & 4), the council serves youth across 55 counties in central and eastern Kentucky, including areas as widespread as Georgetown, Winchester, Maysville, Pikeville, Barboursville, and Somerset.
The Blue Grass Council traces its roots back to 1908, when the first Kentucky Scout troop (and one of the nation's first) was chartered in Frankfort. When the Boy Scouts of America officially formed on February 8, 1910, Frankfort's Troop 1 was given the distinction of being among the nation's first 40 chartered troops. The Lexington Council was officially chartered by the BSA in 1917 and renamed the Blue Grass Council in 1928.
The council's territory has expanded significantly over the decades. By 1963, it served Scouts all the way to the Cumberland Gap, and by 1979, coverage extended to Pikeville. Today, nearly 100 years after the council's founding, it serves over 6,800 youth annually.
Established in 1959, Camp McKee sits on property originally donated by Dr. P. L. and Gertrude McKee in 1943. The camp is the cornerstone of the council's outdoor programming, offering:
The council provides multiple educational pathways:
| Training Program | Focus |
|---|---|
| Core Scouting Trainings | Leader certification and youth development |
| National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) | Youth leadership development (June 7–12, 2026) |
| Wood Badge | Advanced volunteer leader training |
| University of Scouting | Annual professional development conference |
| NRA Shooting Sports Trainings | Shooting sports merit badge instruction |
| Internet Advancement | Digital rank advancement tracking |
The council is governed by an Executive Board that meets 5–6 times annually. The board establishes program direction, determines policy, and provides oversight. Key leadership includes:
"Scouting is a game with a purpose—and that purpose is to instill values that will last a lifetime."
The Blue Grass Council's mission is to recruit more youth into Scouting and retain them in the program for longer, thus impacting their lives. All programming is built around the Scout Oath and Scout Law, emphasizing ethical choices, citizenship, and character development.
Hundreds of volunteers support the council's operations. The organization also maintains partnerships with multiple United Way chapters: Cumberland Trails United Way, United Way of Franklin County, United Way of South Central Kentucky, and United Way of South Eastern Kentucky.
