Full description and what we offer
MD Gun College teaches handgun fundamentals and legal carry in Maryland through state police-certified instruction. Their mission is straightforward: empower people to legally buy and carry firearms for self-defense with the knowledge and skills to do it safely.
Tuition covers 16 hours of classroom instruction (CCW 202) or 4 hours (HQL 201), hands-on range practice, all firearms and protective gear, targets, and the qualification score sheet required for your state application.
What's NOT included: - Maryland WCHP application fee ($75) - Passport photos - Fingerprinting and background check fees ($61 for FPR services) - DC License ($75 application) - Utah card fees ($63 application)
Those are state/service costs, not MD Gun College fees.
| Course | Duration | Cost | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| CCW 202 | 16 hours | $350 | Concealed carry permit training only |
| HQL 201 | 4 hours | $150 | Handgun qualification license (permit to buy) |
| CHCOB1 Combo | Combined | $350 | Maryland CCW + HQL in one training |
| CHUCOM2 | Combined | $400 | Maryland CCW, HQL + Utah multi-state |
| CHALL3 | Combined | $475 | CCW, HQL + Utah, Arizona, VA, DC |
| UT301 | Separate | Varies | Utah concealed carry only |
| DC401 | Separate | $150 | Washington DC concealed carry |
You do NOT need your own gun. Instructors provide all firearms and equipment. No previous shooting experience required. The only requirement is scoring 70% or higher on the range qualification.
Both CCW and HQL classes cover: - Handgun mechanisms and operation - State and federal firearm laws - Legal aspects of self-defense and use of deadly force - Defensive pistol skills - Expanded gun handling safety rules - Cleaning and maintenance - Situational awareness - Gear, accessories, and equipment per Maryland law - Application procedures and requirements - Hands-on range qualification

CCW and HQL are NOT the same thing. This is important.
A Wear and Carry Handgun Permit (WCHP/CCW) lets you carry a handgun on your person or in a vehicle—open or concealed. As of July 2022, you only need to state "personal protection" as your reason.
A Handgun Qualification License (HQL) is what you need to purchase or receive a regulated handgun in Maryland. You can't buy a gun without it.
The good news: CCW training surpasses HQL requirements, so Maryland State Police will issue your HQL upon completion of WCHP training. You don't need separate courses, though combo classes are available.
Three basic steps: 1. Complete training (MD Gun College handles this) 2. Submit fingerprints for background check (they do this in class) 3. Complete online application with Maryland State Police
MD Gun College provides instructions for step 3. If you've been fingerprinted before, you still need new fingerprints—they must be done within 30 days of your application.
Want to carry in multiple states? Utah non-resident permits are popular because they're recognized in many jurisdictions outside Maryland. You can get Utah, Arizona, Virginia, and DC training in the same session—no need for separate classes.
You don't need to be a resident of any of these states to get a non-resident permit.
Schedule an appointment or send a message to get started. Classes run at all five locations with varying schedules.
