Full description and what we offer
IOTA Firearms & Security Training Academy delivers state-certified firearm instruction across Maryland with one core philosophy: firearm safety is everyone's responsibility in the classroom and on the range.
They're Maryland State Police approved for two critical certifications—the Handgun Qualification License (HQL) and Wear and Carry (CCW) permits. If you're buying, transferring, or renting a handgun in Maryland after October 1, 2013, you need HQL training. IOTA handles that requirement: 4 hours minimum covering state firearm law, home safety, handgun mechanics, and live-fire qualification.
For Wear and Carry permits, they offer both initial (16 hours) and renewal (8 hours) approved training. All instruction includes state law, home firearm safety, handgun operation, and a practical shooting component with a minimum 70% accuracy requirement. Security personnel—guards, detectives, special police, armored car drivers—shoot a police-style course of 50+ rounds from 25 yards.
Beyond state requirements, IOTA teaches NRA courses across multiple disciplines:
Pistol Training: - NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting (two-part: online e-learning + live-fire range instruction) - NRA Pistol Marksmanship Simulator Training (no range needed, venue-flexible, fundamentals only) - NRA Instructor Pistol Shooting (16 hours for those wanting to teach)
Rifle Training: - NRA FIRST Steps Rifle Orientation (3+ hours, new shooters welcome) - NRA Basic Rifle Shooting (8+ hours, multiple shooting positions: bench, prone, sitting, standing, kneeling) - NRA Instructor Rifle Shooting (16 hours)
Shotgun Training: - NRA FIRST Steps Shotgun Orientation (3+ hours, moving targets) - NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting (10+ hours, straight-away and angled targets) - NRA Instructor Shotgun Shooting (17 hours)
Reloading Certification: - NRA Basic Metallic Cartridge Reloading (8 hours, classroom-based) - NRA Basic Shotgun Shell Reloading (8 hours) - Instructor certifications available for both (14-17 hours)
Muzzleloading: - NRA-NMLRA Basic Muzzleloading Shooting (12+ hours, rifle/shotgun/pistol or combinations) - NRA-NMLRA Instructor Muzzleloading (18 hours)
IOTA offers Non-Resident Utah Concealed Firearm Permit training—4 hours minimum, federally and state law overview, use of force continuum, handgun nomenclature, pistol fundamentals, malfunction resolution, and concealed carry options. On-site services include firearm familiarity certification, fingerprinting, passport photos, document copying, and shipping to Utah BCI ($47 Utah BCI application fee separate from course fee). Utah processes applications in 60 days.
"Some students prefer a more individualized training program. While we encourage group participation because interaction between students adds to comprehension and discussion, we understand different customers have different requirements."
Private lessons customize training to individual needs beyond standard group classes.
IOTA's team stress that instructors are novice shooter-sensitive, welcome full group participation, and center everything on safety. Their goal: exceed customer expectations and serve the communities they work in with purpose.
Once you complete IOTA's MD HGP training and get approval, you apply as a Permit Exempt applicant for your Handgun Qualification License. Maryland State Police typically approves applications within 1–2 business days via email. Have your HGP ID and expiration date ready when applying.
