Defensive Mindset Training has been teaching defensive firearms skills in the Minneapolis area since 2006. Their approach starts with the basics: grip, stance, sight picture, trigger press, and follow-through. Unlike instructors chasing viral trends, DMT teaches why each element matters and how it actually works under stress.
DMT's methodology cuts through the noise in the firearms training world. They teach what works for citizen defenders—not what looks cool on social media or what military units do in combat zones. Their instructors are critical of institutional inertia: the tendency to teach techniques just because "that's how it's always been done." They question whether appendix carry is right for you, whether external safeties add safety or complexity, and whether a tactic used by SWAT teams actually applies to home defense.
DMT offers multiple training formats:
Their teaching focuses on three core areas:
1. Shooting Fundamentals – Grip, stance, sight picture, trigger press, and follow-through are non-negotiable. If you can't do these slowly and correctly, speed will only make problems worse.
2. Rhythm and Trigger Control – Fast shooting isn't about yanking the trigger. It's about a disciplined trigger cycle: press, reset, press, reset. DMT uses shot timers and metronome apps to develop proper rhythm.
3. Speed vs. Range vs. Accuracy – Your speed should match your target distance and accuracy requirement. Shooting fast at 10 feet is different from shooting accurately at 50 feet. Real defensive speed means speed appropriate to the task.
"How do you shoot fast? Work on fundamentals until you can't get them wrong. Develop a disciplined trigger cycle. Understand that speed should be dictated by range and accuracy requirements." — DMT training material
DMT primarily uses Glock handguns without external safeties. Their reasoning: firearms don't go off by themselves—they require trigger activation. Proper trigger discipline (finger off trigger when sights aren't aligned) prevents negligent discharges better than an extra safety that adds complexity under stress. This approach aligns with modern law enforcement and military adoption—SEAL teams use Sig P226s without external safeties, Army Special Forces run Glock 19s, and the new military standard is the Sig P320 (also without external safety).
DMT also operates an online shop offering:
Beyond in-person training, DMT provides:
DMT questions assumptions. They don't teach techniques just because they work elsewhere. They examine whether a tactic designed for combat zones, competitions, or law enforcement actually serves a citizen defender's needs. Their instructors have experience across law enforcement, military, and civilian defense—and they understand the legal and practical differences between those worlds.
For shooters who want to build real defensive capability without internet hype, DMT offers straightforward instruction grounded in how the human body and mind actually work under stress.
