Missouri CCW Training by an NRA Staff Instructor
Fisher Arms, operated by Chief Instructor Keith Fisher, is located about 3 miles from Hillsboro, Missouri (south of St. Louis on Highway B). Keith isn't just an NRA Certified Instructor—he's also an NRA-appointed Training Counselor who certifies other instructors, and he's one of only two Massad Ayoob Group Staff Instructors in Missouri.
The CCW Class: What You Actually Learn
Missouri law requires a minimum 8-hour CCW class. Fisher Arms classes run 8.5 hours typically, often longer depending on questions. Here's what you cover:
Lesson 1-3: Laws & Pistol Fundamentals
- •Missouri CCW permit laws, where you can and cannot carry
- •Basic pistol mechanics and safe handling
- •How to choose a pistol that fits your hand size, grip strength, and lifestyle (not just what looks good)
Lesson 4: Ammunition Selection
- •Self-defense vs. practice ammunition
- •Selection criteria for defensive rounds
- •1-hour lunch break
Lesson 5: Shooting Methods & Range Training
- •Proven shooting techniques with hands-on training
- •SIRT laser training pistol and computerized LASR target monitoring system
- •See your improvement before live fire
- •10-15 minutes per student at the range, never more than two shooters at once
- •Most students leave shooting more accurately than when they arrived
Lesson 6: The Critical Part—Self-Defense Aftermath (1.5-2 hours)
This is what separates Fisher Arms from basic firearms courses. Keith covers:
- Ways to avoid needing your pistol
- Recognition and response when confrontation is unavoidable
- What happens during and immediately after defensive action
- The 911 call and dealing with police
- Adrenaline effects on your body, decision-making, and fine motor skills
- Emotional, biological, and social repercussions most people never expect
This isn't meant to scare you—it's meant to prepare you for reality.
Lesson 7-8: Holsters & Maintenance
- •Different carry methods for different seasons and clothing
- •Pistol cleaning and maintenance
- •Class typically wraps at 5:30pm
Keith Fisher's training pedigree is substantial:
- •Massad Ayoob certified: Completed MAG 40 (40 hours: 20 shooting + 20 legal/ethical), scored 296/300 on shooting, 100% on legal exam
- •Advanced instruction: Completed MAG 30 (30-hour advanced course, 3,000 rounds in 3 days) and MAG-IC (instructor certification)
- •RangeMaster certified: Master Defensive Pistol Instructor and Defensive Shotgun Instructor
- •NRA Expert: Qualified as NRA Marksmanship Expert with pistol
- •Competition background: IPSC and IPDA competition shooter
- •Philosophy: No one-size-fits-all instruction. Keith introduces multiple shooting concepts and helps you find what works for your abilities and lifestyle. You won't be forced into a specific gun or method.
"I've trained with 7 professional firearms trainers affiliated with the NRA and taken 6 different CCW classes to learn how different instructors teach it. I've taken the best techniques from each and added my own approach." — Keith Fisher
Missouri CCW Permit: Why You Should Still Get One
Even though permitless carry is now legal in Missouri, a Missouri CCW permit has real advantages:
| Benefit | Details |
|---|
| Multi-state recognition | Recognized in 37 states |
| Key advantage | 6 states only recognize permits from your home state—Missouri is crucial |
| Illinois travel | Special rules for Missouri residents; out-of-state permits have disadvantages |
| No out-of-state benefit | Other states' permits offer no advantage for Missouri residents |
