Fernando Colon opened Urban Tactical Firearms at the start of 2021 and immediately faced a good problem: he couldn't stock guns fast enough. A 13-year Army infantry veteran and sniper, Colon brings that background directly into how he runs the store.
Colon moves an average of 60 firearms per week—Glocks dominate the sales, followed by shotguns. He stocks ammo and tactical gear for shooters at every level, handles firearms transfers for online purchases, and offers competitive pricing in a market where options were limited.
"Sales have been through the roof. I can't keep them on my shelves. It's a lot of first-time gun owners—even friends of mine who hate guns are coming in here."
This is where Urban Tactical stands out. Colon noticed new gun owners asking basic questions—literally how to load a firearm—so he built education into the business model:
"I want my passion for the sport to be passed down, as it was to me, but in a safe and meaningful way," Colon said.
Urban Tactical has expanded into adjacent services:
The long-term vision: a one-stop resource for security professionals to get licensed, train, buy gear, and work—all under one roof.
Colon operates as a minority-owned (Puerto Rican descent) and veteran-owned business. Inventory moves so fast that shelf space is rarely the bottleneck—manufacturer supply is. He's not the only store hitting this wall, but demand in Jersey City continues strong.
