Missouri River Clay Target League is the parent organization for all Bismarck-Mandan area high school clay target shooting teams competing in the North Dakota State High School Clay Target League. Operating as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, MRCTL makes competitive shooting accessible to area students through a volunteer-driven program.
The league uses two facilities to offer multiple disciplines:
MRCTL operates as a guest at both facilities and does not rent space. The league works closely with Capital City Gun Club's volunteer board and Mark Sandness (owner of Capital City Sporting Clays) to maintain these resources for young shooters.
The league runs Spring and Fall seasons with weekly shoots organized by flight. Shooters compete according to school and shooting average. The organization coordinates:
Over 2,522 volunteer hours were logged in Spring 2025 alone. MRCTL recruits volunteers for roles including:
On the Line: - Assistant coaches (trap and sporting clays) - Score keepers - Range Safety Officers - Trap fillers (CCGC)
Behind the Scenes: - Flight organizers and coordinators - Score entry and data tracking - Jersey and clothing order coordination - Potluck meal planning - Picture day coordination - Article writing and storytelling - Administrative table duties
"Every week, MR CTL relies on volunteers to make the day successful. It really takes a village to make this program successful."
MRCTL enforces codes of conduct for athletes and families, including:
All shooters and volunteers must follow USA Clay Target League/ND Clay Target League Policies & Procedures and facility-specific rules.
MRCTL's sponsorship model keeps participation affordable. 2025 sponsors include:
Without sponsor support, the league would be "cost prohibitive for far too many families," according to league leadership.
New families can attend meetings, ask questions, and sign up for volunteer roles at either facility. First-timers often find themselves connected to the community quickly—experienced volunteers report that most didn't know anyone when they started.
Volunteer payouts are available at the end of each season, or volunteers can donate their payout back to MRCTL.
