Brown Alumni Magazine was founded in June 1900 by a group of alumni with a simple mission: "to bring the University and its graduates into closer touch and sympathy." Over 125 years later, it continues that work through print and digital platforms.
For its first three decades, the BAM was a subscription monthly (one dollar per year) edited by Henry R. Palmer, class of 1890. In 1931, Brown University offered to take ownership. By 1945, the University was distributing it free to all male alumni. When Palmer—who had become chief editorial writer at the Providence Journal—agreed to turn over the magazine, he and his staff stipulated that the BAM remain editorially independent. This led to the establishment of an alumni board of editors to ensure continuing quality and integrity.
Today, the BAM reaches more than 115,000 people across these groups: - All Brown alumni - Faculty and staff - Parents of current students - Others interested in the institution
The magazine is distributed free to all recipients. Operating budget support comes from donations, voluntary subscriptions, and advertising.
The BAM holds itself to the highest standards of reporting and design. Its bylaws commit the publication to:
"exploring its subject matter in a fair, accurate, credible, and complete way"
The magazine seeks to inspire readers with access to and intellectual engagement with Brown, while maintaining the traditions of close examination, critical evaluation, and debate that are hallmarks of a Brown education.
The magazine covers diverse topics across multiple departments:
