Pheasant Country, Chapter 872 operates as a Pheasants Forever affiliate dedicated to protecting and expanding pheasant habitat across South Dakota. Founded by locals who recognized the region's unique hunting resource, the chapter combines volunteer effort with direct landowner partnerships to create real habitat improvement on the ground.
Habitat & Conservation Programs: - Annual food plot seed giveaways to landowners - Wildlife tree planting initiatives - CBHAP (Cooperative Breeding Habitat Area Program) coordination - Direct work with landowners to establish hunting cover
Membership & Community: Associate memberships start at $45, or attend the annual banquet for $75 and get a free membership year. Life memberships ($1,000) include a leather jacket, framed certificate, gold pin, and recognition in Pheasants Forever Journal. Members receive the Pheasants Forever magazine five times yearly—featuring upland hunting, sporting dogs, habitat projects, and conservation updates.
Held on the Friday before South Dakota pheasant season opens at Mitchell's famous Corn Palace, the banquet draws hunters from across the United States and Canada. The evening includes:
"The Pheasant Country Banquet is where you should spend the Friday evening prior to opening day of Pheasant Season in South Dakota."
Youth trap shoots and youth pheasant hunts introduce the next generation to the sport. A dedicated Youth Director ensures programs run throughout the year.
Pheasants Forever and sister organization Quail Forever have converted member contributions into over 8.5 million acres of wildlife habitat nationally. Supporting Pheasant Country directly improves living conditions for deer, coyotes, foxes, hawks, owls, eagles, and raccoons.
