Singleton's General Store has earned its place as Windsor County royalty since 1946, when Tom Singleton's parents Bud and Mary opened their original location in Reading. What started as a grocery operation evolved into something uniquely Vermont—during post-WWII years, customers would trade old guns for groceries, and Tom still owns many of those firearms today.
The family relocated to Proctorsville in 1978 and built the current 7,500 sq ft operation that's become a hole-in-the-wall favorite precisely because it isn't blown out. Perched between Route 131 and the Black River, just four and a half miles from Okemo Mountain, the store sits in the shadow of busier Ludlow—but that's exactly why locals and visitors prefer it.
One open floor plan with shoulder-high aisles packed with necessities:
"If you can't find it at Singleton's, you don't need it." — Local saying
Behind the store sits a weathered barn-wood smokehouse—the real heart of the operation. This is where Dan Singleton and the team produce what's made Singleton's legendary: smoked pepperoni, smoked jerky, smoked bacon, and marinated meats that customers stock up on like there's a daily apocalypse.
Dan personally sources ideal farms across the East Coast and spends nights researching preparation techniques he then improves upon. The meat selection ranges from budget-conscious ($5.99 steaks) to premium ($38.99 steaks), with current standouts being wagyu and dry-aged beef.
Singleton's now sells less-perishable smoked meats online—a venture taking off faster than expected.
Tom Singleton represents the quiet Vermont wisdom that's earned his family's reputation. His son Dan continues the legacy with the same subtle pride and deep roots in his community. It's a place where hunters and fishers gather after long days, weigh their catch on the scale out front, and exchange stories over drinks and smoked meat.
