Location details and information
Mason Dixon Rifle Club operates as a member-driven facility hosting multiple shooting disciplines throughout the year. Located near Morgantown, the club maintains separate ranges designed for specific shooting sports, each with established rules and firearm restrictions.
The club runs four primary competition types:
| Discipline | Frequency | Details |
|---|---|---|
| IDPA | Monthly | Tactical handgun matches; 3-hour pre-match closure; online pre-registration via PractiScore |
| Steel Challenge | Monthly | Fast-action courses; 2-hour pre-match closure; jacketed bullets prohibited |
| Smallbore Silhouette | Monthly | Metallic silhouette targets; dedicated rimfire range |
| Sporting Clays | Scheduled | Trap and clays shooting |
The club maintains multiple specialized shooting areas:
Safety System: All ranges equipped with audible and visual alert systems (strobe lights and horns at each canopy). Members must activate switches before going downrange to set or change targets. All firearms must be unloaded with chamber flags inserted during alert activation.
IDPA Matches feature multiple divisions and classes. Recent match announcements note that Sig P320 firearms are temporarily prohibited following IDPA headquarters directive. Competitors can pre-register on PractiScore.com or register day-of between 9:00 AM–9:45 AM, with matches beginning at 10:00 AM. 5×5 Classifier matches also available for skill level assessment.
Steel Challenge Matches use five timed stages with names like "You Sure They Are Bigger," "Arrow," "Just V," "Smoke & Hope," and "Top Shot." Matches held Saturdays with setup beginning at 8:00 AM and registration 9:00 AM–9:45 AM. Volunteer assistance needed for setup and teardown.
Smallbore Silhouette Matches compete monthly with scores tracked by shooter. Metallic cartridges used; dedicated silhouette targets positioned downrange.
Card-based gate access system controls entry. Members receive badge access with option to piggyback guests through gate. The club emphasizes member responsibility—guest access should be limited to when members have separate vehicles present. Unknown individuals attempting entry can politely be asked to show club ID.
"In my 30 years as a member, I'm only aware of one membership revocation. However, if members continue to disrespect the club, they run the risk of permanent membership revocation." — Club management notice
Members required to: - Remove all targets and trash after shooting sessions - Leave ranges in better condition than found - Follow firearm restrictions for each range (no 30-caliber on Bullseye Range, rimfire only on Rimfire Range, etc.) - Abide by downrange alert system protocols - Not carry rocks, bricks, or materials downrange without removing them
The club has invested in recent infrastructure upgrades including the completed Trap House, alert system installation, and Action Bay vehicle support improvements via trench compaction and gravel leveling.
Club keeps membership fees low through member participation. Monthly Work Days scheduled on Saturdays. Members unable to attend scheduled work days can arrange weekday alternatives. These requirements help fund ongoing projects and facility maintenance.
Matches typically closed to general range use 2 hours prior to match start (3 hours for IDPA). Match Directors authorize "All Clear" before range reopens to other shooters. Full calendar available online with daily cancellation checks. Recent facility maintenance notifications posted for items like grass cutting closures and equipment repairs.
