The property that is now Menomonie Public Shooting Range was purchased by Dunn County in 1964 for a dollar. Originally little more than a dumping ground for tin cans, old furniture, and refrigerators, it's been completely rebuilt by the Menomonie Rifle and Pistol Club since 1980.
Four shooters—Stu Fullerton, Mike and Mark Brave, and Dave Kraft—met in a UW-Stout classroom and decided to take responsibility for the range. What followed was decades of volunteer work and grant funding that transformed the property into a functioning shooting facility.

The Menomonie Rifle and Pistol Club is looking for new members. They ask for 20 hours per year of assistance from members—helping with events, range maintenance, improvements, or community outreach.
"Members of the club include people from all walks of life, all ages, and backgrounds. Without more active members, there is concern as to the future of the range."
Members include gunsmithing enthusiasts, competitive shooters, hunters, reloaders, and collectors. You get access to a network of shooting knowledge and sometimes equipment comes up for sale within the club.
Over the last several years, volunteers have completed: - New Blue Sky Blocker for safety - Trap range installation (for Menomonie High School trap team) - ADA-accessible 300-yard firing bench (van accessible, wheelchair access) - Well and pump house for running water and lead residue removal - New concrete pads and gravel walkways - Yardage markers on all ranges - Rock retaining walls for erosion control - Telephone and loudspeaker communication systems - Re-worked 100 and 200-yard berms - Trees planted for noise control
The club hosts events throughout the year: - Youth Muzzleloader Shooting Clinic - Gals and Guns (women's shooting events) - Project Appleseed (historical rifle marksmanship) - Hunter's Education Field Tests - Fun Shoots (public club competitions) - First Responder Appreciation Day - Private events and team building for organizations
Parts of club funds (separate from range donations) go to local nonprofits: Christmas Wish, Stepping Stones, Special Olympics, veterans organizations, Dunn County Crime Stoppers, and Dunn County Sportsmen's Alliance. The club supports all branches of military, law enforcement, and first responders.
All shooters must read and sign the range rules before using the facility. Key points:
Violators face expulsion and prosecution. There are no warnings—you sign the rules before shooting.
