THE PRIMER

NEWSLETTER OF THE BOISE GUN CLUB

ISSUE # 4 FOR 2009-2010.  JULY.

BGC President’s Message

This is the fourth and final newsletter from the current Boise Gun Club Board of Directors.  It was the goal from the beginning of this term, especially the goal of Secretary Kent Harris, to improve communications with club members.  One action to achieve that goal was to publish quarterly newsletters. With this newsletter that goal was realized.

Election:

The election of Club directors is underway.  Each life member and annual member of record should have received a ballot with voting instructions.  Please participate in the election of Directors.  I have frequently heard the comment from a few members indicating they don’t know people running for the board.  If you haven’t yet voted and would like to talk to any of the candidates, give the Gun Club a call (342-0892) and you will be provided the phone number or numbers of the candidates and you can call them and talk to them in person.  I suspect there are better ways to inform the members about the candidates and I have some ideas.  But that will have to wait until the next election.

New Employee:

If you haven’t been to the Club in a while you will be greeted by a new personality at the cashier window when you do visit.  Bobbi Oldfield has taken the position of Club cashier on a permanent basis.  She succeeds Kryshelle Oldfield who worked several years for the Club as a trapper and most recently for the past year as Club cashier.  Yes, there is a connection.  You can guess!

Kryshelle accepted a full-time position with Home Again, ICS that resulted in her working seven days a week with her Club cashiering role.  That’s quite a work load for an eighteen year old.  She felt it necessary to resign from the Boise Gun Club.  Thank you, Kryshelle, for a job well done!

Skeet Field Lights:

I have been in discussions with some of the skeet shooters, other Club members, and an electrician regarding lights on two of the skeet fields.  I’m awaiting a scheduling date from the skeet shooters to get this project completed.  We will then schedule a high-lift machine and organize a work party for this effort.

Web Page:

The new revised Boise Gun Club web page is up and running.  A special thanks to Brian Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona, who was instrumental in the revision.  Brian, a former Boise Gun Club trapper, shooter, and also the son of Club member Guy Johnson, has provided his expertise and service at no cost to the Boise Gun Club.  Brian told me he was doing this to “give back” to the Boise Gun Club in appreciation for the opportunities the Boise Gun Club gave him in his younger years.  Dale Hurd, Boise Gun Club Director and tech guru, was Brian’s local contact in the revision.

Up-coming Special Shoots:

Don’t forget the annual members meeting and Club shoot Sunday, August 22nd.

In addition to the scheduled PITA & ATA Trap Shoots and the Club shoot, we have several requests for special and/or private shoots.

These shoots include the Fergason Company (plumbing, lights, appliances) shoot scheduled for Tuesday, August 24nd.  They anticipate 100 participants and several vendors.

We are again working with the Sportsman for Fish and Wildlife (SFW) to bring a Tom Knapp  (former Benelli rep) shooting demonstration to the Boise Gun Club.  The scheduled date is Saturday, September 11th.  (A special thanks to the Caldwell Gun Club for rescheduling their registered shoot from Saturday, September 11th to Sunday, September 12th.  We didn’t want to compete with their shoot and SFW and Tom Knapp did not have any alternative dates.)  SFW anticipates as many as 300 attendees.  There will be organized competitive shooting events in the morning followed by the Tom Knapp demonstration, raffle, and auction in the afternoon.

Then there is the always well attended American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Idaho shoot scheduled for Thursday, September 23rd.  This is a popular annual shoot.  Our thanks to ACEC for their routine annual support of the Boise Gun Club.

So with these special shoots, registered PITA and ATA Trap Shoots, and the annual members meeting and Club shoot, we have a very busy calendar.  We need volunteer help from Club members for all of these shoots.  Please contact a Director and volunteer to help with shoot preparation and during the shoots.  Directors will also be contacting members for assistance as well.

As I pen this final President’s message I would be remiss not to recognize and thank the Directors who served full or partial terms during the current year for their dedication and support.  Each of them brought a unique personality and a variety of very useful experience and expertise to the Board.  So to Abe Wilson, Don Nicely, Kent Harris, Dale Ham, Dale Hurd, Russ Westerberg, Stan Rushton, Thor Fin-Kelson, Chuck Terry, and Steve Eichenberger.  I say Thank you!

I also thank all the Club members who supported me and/or stepped forward in various volunteer capacities.  To name them all without omitting someone is impossible for me, but you know who you are.  Thank you!

Then last but not least in the name of domestic tranquility I say, thank you to my wife Gerry for her support, patience (sometimes limited), and her volunteer efforts.  She was and is the unpaid face behind the cashier’s window on numerous occasions as a volunteer in the absence of the regular cashiers.  Thank you Gerry!

That’s it for this year… hope to see you “Down the Line”.

Wayne

Well, summer finally got here (after a spring to remember) and activity has been heavy at the club.  Before we recap the activities of the last three months I would like to make a few comments regarding the operation of the club over the past year.

With four club newsletters and numerous mailed notices, the club membership was well communicated with.  Also, minutes from the board of director’s meetings were posted at the club, and many club members attended board meetings and special meetings throughout the year.  The club had a very successful meat shoot season last fall, leagues are rebounding with much better numbers than the previous year, and all of our registered trapshoots and special shooting events (Super bowl Fun Shoot, etc.) made money for the club.  Two state shoots were prepared for and run well by the club (in spite of windy weather-bah!)

The club has developed a system to track and record club shooting activity and target inventory for each month and we are also in the process of reorganizing and simplifying our records and bookkeeping system which (we hope) will make it easier to run the club and extract cost and expense data.

The club was able to reduce the price of memberships from $50 to $35 per year and lower the cost of shooting per round, in part because of the savings of several thousand dollars in labor costs due to club members helping score and work at some of the meat shoots and registered shoots during the year.  We will be asking for help in this area again in the coming year.

So much for what the Secretary thought was important during the past year, let’s take a look at what happened at the club over the last few months.

Texas Hold Em’:

Liz Harris ran a tournament each month as a fundraiser for the league prize fund and turned in $320 to the club.

June 26th(League Party Night).  First full house – Max Breidfjord, first straight – Bob Friend, first flush – Max Breidfjord.  Third place – Joe Buresh,  second and first chopped the pot – Max Breidfjord and Della the dealer.

Work Parties –April 24th and May 8th

The following members (and probably a few we missed) took part in the work parties to get the club ready for the two state shoots in May and June.  They cleaned in the clubhouse, worked on the lawn and grounds and worked on the trap line and equipment for the shoots.  Don Nicely, John Piccone, Chuck Whipple, Art Voorhis, Dale Ham, Dale Hurd (and the Boy Scout crew – great job on the yardage numbers), Chuck Terry, Wayne Faude, Gerry Faude, Kent Harris, Abe Wilson, Steve DeWeese, Trish DeWeese, Jay Fraiser, Charlie Woodruff, Damon Black, Dennis Dursteler.
