Walnut and Steel is a Steel Challenge match—eight standardized stages of pure speed shooting at steel plates, timed to the hundredth of a second. If you want to test how fast and clean you can shoot a handgun or pistol-caliber carbine, this is the format that matters in competitive shooting.

You'll shoot five runs on each stage and drop your worst time. Steel Challenge rewards precision under pressure without the complicated movement and stages of other matches. York Chapter runs these regularly, so it's a straightforward way to see where you stand against the clock.
