HKS was founded in October 1973 by Hiroyuki Hasegawa (former Yamaha Motor engineer) and partner Kitagawa, with backing from Sigma Automotive Co., Ltd.—hence the "HKS" name. They began in a dairy-farming shed at the foot of Mount Fuji in Japan with a straightforward vision: design and build high-performance engines and components that OE manufacturers couldn't or wouldn't produce.
In their first year, Hasegawa designed and built the first aftermarket turbocharger for passenger cars. That innovation launched an entire product line that transformed the Japanese automotive aftermarket.
HKS designs and manufactures performance components across multiple categories:
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Turbochargers | GT turbine kits, full turbine assemblies, universal turbines (VR38DETT, FA24, 2JZ-GTE compatible) |
| Superchargers | Complete supercharger kits with installation support |
| Exhaust Systems | Hi-Power mufflers, LegaMax exhaust, HKStudie systems for BMW M3, Civic Type R, Tundra, GR Corolla |
| Suspension | HiperMax coilovers, oil cooler kits, complete suspension overhauls |
| Engine Parts | Complete engines, short blocks, timing belts, fuel management computers |
| Cooling Systems | Oil coolers, radiator kits, cooling line assemblies |
