Processing dropped from 150 days to 18 — pro-2A groups are cautiously praising the progress

ATF Director Robert Cekada announced Monday that Form 4 processing times have fallen from 150 days to roughly 18 days since fiscal year 2021.

That last number matters. The agency is processing nearly four times as many forms while cutting wait times by 80 percent. That's not just shuffling the deck — something structural changed internally.

"While no citizen should have to wait any amount of time to procure their lawfully purchased firearms and firearm products, the reduction in ATF Form 4 processing times from roughly 150 days to around 18 days today is a meaningful improvement." — NRA-ILA Executive Director John Commerford
- SAF's Adam Kraut noted he's been through the NFA process since paper-only forms and 3-month waits — through the dark days of 18-month backlogs — and called sub-three-week averages "encouraging."
- GOA's Aidan Johnston credited Public Law 118-42, which GOA lobbied for in 2024 and directed ATF to reduce NFA processing times. Johnston said Cekada is "carrying out the law successfully."
The legal question: SAF is currently suing over the continued NFA registration requirement for suppressors and SBRs — items where the reconciliation bill Trump signed in July 2025 zeroed out the tax. Kraut's argument is straightforward: if there's no tax, there may be no legal basis for the registration scheme. If a court agrees, Form 4 wait times for the most popular NFA items could become moot entirely.
Yes, but: Individual Form 4s now average six days. Trust Form 4s still run 26 days. Electronic Form 1s (permission to manufacture an NFA item) average 59 days — more than three times the Form 4 baseline. The headline number is real progress; the full picture is uneven.
The bottom line: Eighteen days is a long way from eighteen months. Gun owners buying NFA items today are living in a meaningfully different regulatory environment than they were four years ago — and the legal landscape may shrink that list of NFA items further before this is over.
