Federal's 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak Wins Top Award

NASGW-POMA judges name the high-pressure Creedmoor variant Best Ammunition New Product for 2026, and it runs in rifles you already own.

From The Boise Gun Club Handbook

Federal's 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak just took home the Caliber Award for Best Ammunition New Product at the 2026 NASGW Expo in Phoenix.

The award, handed out by the National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers in partnership with the Professional Outdoor Media Association, came during the group's appreciation dinner October 13-15. An 18-person panel of wholesalers and media veterans judged entries across seven categories on uniqueness, market need, and execution. The 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak took the ammo crown.

What makes it different: This isn't a new cartridge needing a new rifle. It's a 6.5 Creedmoor built around Federal's Peak Alloy case, loaded to 80,000 psi instead of the standard round's roughly 62,000 psi ceiling. Same external dimensions, same magazine, same chamber — if you've got a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle, you likely can run it.

By the numbers:

  • Muzzle velocity gains of roughly 300 fps over standard 6.5 Creedmoor loads
  • Select loads exceed 3,000 fps at the muzzle
  • Chamber pressure rated to 80,000 psi via the Peak Alloy case
  • Recoil stays comparable to standard-pressure loads, per Federal

The 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak follows Federal's 7mm Backcountry, the Peak Alloy cartridge the company introduced in 2025 that required new rifles and barrels built for the higher pressure. This time, Federal engineered the performance bump into a case that fits existing rifles instead of asking shooters to buy new hardware.

"Our 7mm Backcountry and all-new 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak usher in a new era of ammunition and truly unlock unprecedented performance," said Jesse Whiteside, Federal's VP of Product Management and R&D.

What it means for your rifle: More velocity out of a cartridge you already own means flatter trajectories and more retained energy downrange for hunting and long-range target work, without the cost or hassle of rebarreling. Worth checking your specific rifle's pressure rating and manufacturer guidance before feeding it high-pressure ammo, since not every 6.5 Creedmoor build may be rated for the extra 18,000 psi.

What's next: Federal says the 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak is rolling out to dealers now, with more load options expected as the line matures. Watch for rifle manufacturers to start explicitly rating new builds for Peak Alloy pressures as the cartridge gains traction.
