Full description and what we offer
Calder Mountain Lodge sits on the northernmost point of Prince of Wales Island in Point Baker, Alaska—accessible only by boat or floatplane. This family-owned operation runs seasonal trips (June–September for fishing, May for bear hunting) out of their main lodge facility in the wilderness.
You fly into Petersburg, Alaska, and the lodge picks you up by boat. The operation handles transportation from the airport, lodging, all meals, fishing boats with gear, hunting equipment, and fish processing. When you leave, they vacuum-pack and box your catch so you can fly it home on Alaska Airlines.
Self-Guided Fishing Package: $3,500 per person - 6 nights, 5 days (double occupancy) - 18' to 20' custom aluminum boats with 60–90 HP motors (20' covered boats available as upgrade) - Fishing rods, reels, terminal tackle, bait restocked daily - GPS/Fish Finder combo, radio, rain gear, rubber boots - Hot breakfast, sack lunch, full dinner - Fish filleting, vacuum packaging, and boxing (up to 3 boxes) - Fuel included - NOT included: Fishing license, King salmon stamp, tips
Self-Guided Bear Hunt + Halibut Fishing: $3,100 per person - Same boat and lodging setup as fishing packages - Fuel metered and charged at end of week (not included like fishing) - Note: Black bear tags are drawn in December for spring/fall hunts; nonresidents apply through Alaska's draw system
Sumner Strait is one of Southeast Alaska's most productive saltwater fisheries. The lodge sits minutes from:
| Species | Best Season | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| King Salmon | Mid-June to early July | High numbers migrating through |
| Silver Salmon | July to September | Abundant all through season |
| Halibut | All season | Excellent year-round |
| Ling Cod | All season | Plentiful in the strait |
| Rockfish | All season | Available alongside other species |
Prince of Wales, Kuiu, and Kupreanof Islands are known for trophy-class black bears. The lodge has access to hunt both the northern section of Prince of Wales Island and the famous Kuiu and Kupreanof Islands. Why the high success rates?
The lodge recommends patience and selectivity: wait for the right bear rather than taking the first one you see.
The lodge features: - Guest rooms on the second floor of the main lodge - Two guests per room with private bathrooms - Comfortable beds, lounge chairs, TVs - Spacious deck with views of forest, islands, and bays - Home-cooked meals (hot breakfast, packed lunch for the water, full dinner) - BYOB alcohol policy (no liquor license; nearest store in Petersburg)
Dietary Restrictions: Contact ahead. The remote location limits accommodation options for specialized diets or allergies.
The lodge books up fast—currently taking reservations 2 years in advance. They operate two properties:
Payment Schedule: - Reservations before October 1: $500 per person deposit - After October 1: Three equal payments (October 1, February 1, April 1) - After January 1: 50% down, balance April 1
