The Snake River and surrounding wetlands create ideal conditions for waterfowl hunting. Warm water keeps the river accessible through winter, while nearby fields and brush provide feeding grounds for migratory birds heading south. This combination—plus Hagerman's small-town charm and local hot springs—makes it a serious destination for duck and goose hunters.

The Hagerman Valley Inn has been welcoming hunters since 1988. The owner, Jim, knows the area and can point you toward outfitters who specialize in showing visitors the best spots and maximizing their trips.
Licensing & Regulations: - Idaho hunting license required (non-resident fee applies) - Migratory Bird Permit required - Duck and goose season typically runs October through late January - Purchase licenses at sporting goods stores, online, or by phone - Booklets with current rules, limits, and season dates available at licensing locations

1. Timing - Get to your blind before sunrise. Ducks feed at night and return to water at first light. Decoys should be out before they arrive. Foggy conditions help hide your presence.
2. Camouflage - Light brown, grass-colored camo blends best. Natural blinds are scattered throughout the area. Many hunters also work from John Boats using reeds and grass for cover. Boat launches available at 1000 Springs Resort, Owsley Bridge, and Bell Rapids.
3. Water Retrieval - The Snake River is cold and deep. A boat or retriever dog is practical. Waders work for ponds and shallow areas. Some of the best hunting happens when ponds freeze and the river becomes the only refuge for tired birds.
Snow and cold drive northern birds into the valley. Mornings typically bring fog (burns off by mid-morning), but weather changes fast. Wear layers, know your exit route, keep valuables in floating packs, and check conditions before heading out daily.
Bullets 'N Brew (coffee shop in town) stocks ammunition and supplies for hunters. The shop is a quick walk from Hagerman Valley Inn. Firearm enthusiasts will find a good selection of guns and gear.
Several well-known hunters return to Hagerman every year for the epic hunts and the town's atmosphere.
