Full description and what to expect
NRA Silhouette is a precision rifle competition where shooters engage reactive steel targets at known distances. Unlike most rifle matches, you'll shoot from standing, sitting, or prone positions—no rests allowed. Each target you hit falls down, giving you instant feedback on your accuracy.
Matches typically feature four target types positioned at different yardages: - Chickens (small silhouettes at ~55 yards) - Pigs (medium targets at ~77 yards) - Turkeys (larger targets at ~110 yards) - Rams (rams at ~150 yards)
You'll usually shoot 10 rounds at each target type from the position specified. The goal is simple: knock down as many targets as possible. Your score is the total number of knockdowns.
Silhouette attracts shooters who enjoy testing fundamental marksmanship skills at distance. You don't need a tricked-out precision rifle—iron sights are legal and competitive. This event suits shooters looking for a straightforward format where accuracy matters more than speed or tactical movement.
Competitions typically include divisions for different firearm types and experience levels, so check with the match director for current categories.
Positions are shot as specified for each target distance. Expect to transition between standing, sitting, and prone—part of the challenge is managing position changes while maintaining accuracy.
