Ballard operates as an independent 501(C)3 non-profit—not a state-run facility. Primary funding comes from: - Annual banquet fundraiser - Program fees - Donations and memorials - CRP (Conservation Reserve Program) - Small endowment - Grants for specific improvement projects (wetland overlook, fishing pier, trail surfacing)
The board of directors and numerous volunteers staff the visitor center, maintain grounds, lead programs, and manage the property.
In 2014, the Glen Mathias family donated 7 wooded acres adjoining the property, expanding preservation efforts.
The center's mission is clear: provide high-quality environmental education to students, educators, organizations, and individuals through visitor interpretation, educational displays, and natural community restoration. Special emphasis on ecosystems typically found in southeastern Illinois.
