Full description and what we offer
Alvin Products, a division of Dampney Company, has manufactured specialty repair and maintenance products since 1950. The company was founded on a single innovation: Lab-metal, a unique one-part metal dent filler that spreads like paste and hardens into metal through air exposure alone.
Lab-metal fills dents and flaws in metal and nonmetal surfaces without requiring two-part mixing, measuring, heat, special tools, or specialized skill. You apply it straight from the can with a putty knife. No waste. No complicated prep. It adheres to clean, dry metal, wood, glass, plaster, porcelain, and hard plastic—and the bond withstands vibration and difficult conditions.
Available sizes: - 12 oz. Lab-metal (1/2 pint can) - 24 oz. Lab-metal (pint can) - Lab-metal "450" (air-dries for 450°F applications without heat curing)

Alvin Products' formulations solve problems in: - Powder coating (patching and sealing before coating) - Welding and metal fabrication - Auto body and restoration - Chrome plating and electroplating - Engine and exhaust repair - Stove restoration - Metal casting (porosity sealing) - Industrial foundry work - Bearing and transmission repair - Marine applications
Lab-metal Coverage: 10.2 sq ft/gallon at 1/8" thickness | 5.1 sq ft/gallon at 1/4" thickness
Lab-metal and Hi-Temp Lab-metal harden through solvent evaporation—not chemical reaction. This means: - Air dry time: 24+ hours for Hi-Temp Lab-metal - Heat curing required: Hi-Temp must reach 425°F for one hour before powder coating - Sanding: Do this AFTER curing, not before - Shelf life: 2 years (Lab-metal unopened) | 1 year (Hi-Temp unopened)
Pro tip from Alvin: Keep your applicator wet with Lab-solvent while smoothing applications to reduce "pulling" and improve finish quality.

Lab-metal has been featured in restoration projects including the Chatham Railroad Museum caboose restoration, and has been used by chrome platers and metal finishers for cosmetic patching and electroplating prep work.
Alvin Products emphasizes proper technique: surface preparation, dry time, re-coat windows, and heat curing instructions directly impact results. The company recommends calling (800) 537-7023 for technical questions before first-time applications, as each repair is unique and may require different preparation methods.
