Full description and what we offer
IDPA Michigan is the state coordinator for the International Defensive Pistol Association, a nationwide action shooting sport organization. If you're in Alpena or Northeast Michigan and want to shoot defensive pistol matches, the Alpena Defensive Pistol League (ADPL) is where you'll find the action.
IDPA is straightforward: you bring a practical handgun, defensive ammo, a quality holster, and test your skills in simulated self-defense scenarios. It's competitive, but the goal is testing your ability—not just speed. The matches use practical equipment, real defensive ammunition, and courses of fire that make you think while you shoot.
New shooters are welcome. Seriously. You don't need experience. Bring: - A handgun suitable for self-defense - 150 rounds of ammunition - A belt-mounted holster that covers the trigger guard - A concealment garment - At least 3 magazines
ADPL runs practice nights and monthly matches at Alpena Sportsmen's Club.
Alpena Sportsmen's Club 4260 M32-W Alpena, MI 49707 Phone: (989) 354-2582
Match Directors: - Dave Wright: 989-820-6365 - Mark Hay: 989-916-5795
Alpena is one of 20+ clubs hosting IDPA matches across Michigan. The Michigan Area also runs major championships including the Michigan State Championship, Great Lakes Regional, and regional challenge events. If you want to step up from local practice, there's a clear path to bigger competition.
IDPA offers Safety Officer training if you want to help run matches or become a certified range official.
Show up to a practice night or match. The community is built on shooters helping shooters improve. The barrier to entry is low—just bring a gun that works and ammo that's reliable. You'll learn the rules, the stages, and meet people who shoot the same way you think about self-defense.
