In October 2016, Appelman Law Firm successfully defended David Haywood in a Minnesota Supreme Court case that clarified firearm definitions. The court ruled that an air-powered BB gun (Walther CP99 Compact) does not meet the legal definition of a firearm because it uses compressed air rather than gunpowder or explosive force as propellant. This decision reversed a lower court ruling and resulted in the dismissal of firearm possession charges.
