Location details and information
The Prior Lake Sportsmen's Club was organized in 1966 and has spent decades training shooters in safe firearms handling. Since the first safety course in April 1968, the club estimates it has trained close to 3,000 young people and adults—three instructors alone have volunteered over 35 years with the program.
Two sessions run annually: - Spring Session: Starts in March - Fall Session: Starts in late August
The course structure is straightforward: 6 classroom sessions followed by a Saturday morning field day where students fire rifles and shotguns under supervision.
Ages 11+ | $15 per student | Co-sponsored by Prior Lake VFW
Membership stands around 30 people—a mix of ages from high school students to retirees. The club meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM at the Prior Lake VFW (lower level). Meetings include business, guest speakers, and pizza nights 2-3 times yearly. No meetings July or August.
Beyond safety instruction, the club:
- •Hosts the 45th Annual Ice Fishing Contest (January, with $300-$50 grand prizes)
- •Sponsors a handicap fishing outing each year through Minnesota's Capable Partners Program—typically 25-30 participants
- •Sponsors Prior Lake High School Trap Team and Fishing Team
- •Participates in lake cleanup, highway adoption, and DNR lake access improvements
