Full description and what we offer
Hunters for Eagle Conservation is a Montana-based program that addresses a real problem: bald and golden eagles die from lead poisoning when they scavenge on gut piles left in the field after hunting. The solution is straightforward—switch to lead-free ammunition.
The program offers $40 vouchers to Montana residents to offset the cost of one box of lead-free factory ammunition or reloading bullets in common rifle calibers for big game hunting. This isn't theoretical conservation—it's hands-on action that hunters can take in the field.
Eagles ingest lead fragments from gut piles left by hunters. Using lead-free ammo eliminates this source of poisoning.
Vouchers are redeemable at participating Montana retailers:
In-Store Locations: - Momma Bear's Armory (Gardiner) - RW Outdoors (Sheridan) - Scheels (Missoula) - Selway Armory (Missoula) - Shedhorn Sports (Ennis) - Yellowstone Sporting Goods (Livingston)
Online Options: - SelwayArmory.com - HammerBullets.com - CopperKingAmmo.com - Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops (mail-in orders)
Bald and golden eagles face multiple threats—wind turbines, electrocution, vehicle collisions—but lead poisoning is preventable. The program ran shooting demonstrations so hunters could see lead-free ammo performance firsthand, proving it works without compromising results.
Hunters for Eagle Conservation is operated by Conservation Science Global, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2016. All Montana residents are eligible for one voucher. Processing takes up to 48 hours, and participants agree to a brief post-season survey to measure program effectiveness.
