Full description and what we offer
Darrell Hanks creates handmade bows using pernambuco, ebony, silver, gold, abalone shell, and fossilized Mastodon ivory. Each bow begins with carefully selected raw materials—pernambuco specifically chosen for its varied density, resiliency, and color characteristics to match individual player needs.
The process is meticulous: materials are planned, carved, filed, hammered, heated, and bent by hand. Hanks has spent years sourcing fine materials and ensures ethical sourcing throughout.
"It is like having a whole new violin — and a much better one at that!" — Morgan O'Shaughnessey, professional recording musician
Beyond custom work, the shop maintains a rotating inventory of consignment bows from established makers:
- •Hill and Sons
- •Sartory
- •Ouchard
- •Contemporary makers
Every consignment bow is inspected and tested before acceptance. The shop also carries fine rosins and bow cases.
Darrell's custom work has reached professional musicians across genres:
- •John Sherba — Violinist, Kronos Quartet
- •Kevin Carr — International fiddler and storyteller
- •Hannah Hillebrand — Cellist, Northwest Piano Trio
- •Jon McCullough-Benner — Principal bassist, Milwaukee Symphony
- •Hamilton Cheifetz — Professor of cello, Portland State University
Musicians consistently report the same result: a bow transforms what their instrument can do, unlocking new depth and responsiveness in sound.
