The American Smallbore Shooting Association was established in 2016 to promote, protect and sustain conventional smallbore rifle competitive target shooting in the United States. Since 2018, ASSA has been fully engaged in developing and promoting smallbore F-Class competition (F-SBR) across the country, including rule generation, course of fire development, and confirmation of national records.
ASSA sanctions three distinct competitive disciplines:
3-Position (3-P) Shooting - 3x40 format at 50 meters using A50 target - Positions: Kneeling, Prone, Standing - National records tracked separately for Any Sights and Metallic Sights categories
American Prone Shooting - 6400 format (6,400 total points possible) - Shooting distances: 50 yards and 100 yards - Multiple days of competition with 60 shots for record at each distance - Includes Any Sights and Metallic Sights classifications
F-SBR (F-Class Smallbore Rifle) - Newer discipline gaining rapid adoption - Allows F-Class rules adapted for smallbore rifles - Attracts fullbore competitors transitioning to smallbore
Competitors are classified from entry-level to elite: - Marksman (entry level) - Sharpshooter - Expert - Master - High Master (elite)
Separate classifications exist for conventional and F-SBR disciplines.

ASSA runs the Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships in partnership with X-Count, hosting the event for the 4th consecutive year in Fort Wayne, Indiana (March 21-22). This is open for registration and attracts collegiate shooting teams nationwide.

Isabella Baldwin's 2022 3-P record broke the civilian record previously set by Ginny Thrasher in 2020 by 5 x-marks, even with the course of fire reversed from that year.
ASSA operates as a membership organization. Members receive: - Access to mailing list with timely notifications - Classification tracking and standing - Eligibility for national championship entries - Competitor meeting attendance and input on organization direction
Membership renewals and new member applications handled through website. Active competitors can track their classifications in 3-Position, Prone, and F-SBR disciplines.
ASSA is explicitly an organization for shooters by shooters. Direct competitor input shapes rule development and operations: - Open forum competitor meetings held during championships - Meetings conducted with minimum two ASSA officers present - Meeting minutes from all sessions published for full transparency - Competitors, coaches, parents, and spectators invited to provide suggestions and feedback - Rules updated annually based on competitive community feedback
ASSA championships supported by 17+ company sponsors and individual sponsors who receive recognition and shooter support. Current sponsor dealers include Ernie Bishop (Gillette, WY) and Mike Ratigan (Woodward, OK).
ASSA maintains comprehensive match calendar listing events from ASSA, CMP, USAS, and NRA to help shooters plan efficiently. Competitors can view full schedule and register for upcoming matches through the website.
