Tom Ranch didn't start as a hunting operation. The family acquired the original land in 1857—Charles and Ellen Tom left Seguin and began buying acreage that eventually grew to about 100,000 acres across Atascosa, Live Oak, McMullen, and Karnes Counties. For over a century, the Toms ran cattle. Edmund Tom pioneered the Simbrah breed by crossing European Simmental genetics with registered Brahman cattle in 1969, and served as chairman of the American Simmental Association board.
In 1997, J.Pat Tom and his father Edmund decided to add commercial hunting to their ranching operation. That decision has made them a destination for hunters across the country—some clients have returned nearly every year for two decades.
Tom Ranch (Original) - Location: 8 miles south of Hebbronville, Texas off Highway 16 - Address: 2467 Hwy 16 South, Hebbronville, TX 78361 - Counties: Atascosa, Live Oak, McMullen - Primary game: Whitetail deer, water buffalo, hogs, javelina, turkey, alligator
La Perla Ranch (Acquired 2014) - Location: Deep South Texas - Address: 5320 Hwy 281 Alternate, Campbellton, TX 78008 - Counties: Jim Hogg, Duval, Webb - Primary game: Axis deer, fallow deer, gemsbok, zebra, exotic species
Both ranches are high-fenced and managed year-round. The Tom family runs supplemental feeding programs, controlled burns, brush sculpting, and disking to maintain habitat quality. J.Pat acquired his whitetail breeding permit in 2009 specifically to release quality deer back onto the ranch.
A typical whitetail day starts before dawn. You'll get coffee and a light breakfast, then head to your hunting blind with an experienced guide. Most blinds are elevated box stands positioned on food plots, senderos, and near corn feeders.
Pre-Hunt Preparation: - Shooting range session the afternoon before (zeroing your rifle) - Ranch map showing all blind locations across different pastures - Video review of deer scouted at feeders and food plots - Instruction on aging deer for hunters new to the sport
After the Harvest: Once you take your buck, the ranch handles everything. They load your deer, transport you to the cleaning facility, weigh and score your buck, and let you photograph it before processing. Your trophy gets stored in their large walk-in cooler until the end of your hunt, then transported to the taxidermist (or you can take it to your own).
Hunting schedule alternates morning and evening sessions with a midday break for rest or relaxing on the ranch.
At La Perla Ranch, you can hunt: - Axis deer - tropical deer with curved antlers - Fallow deer - palmate-antlered species - Gemsbok - African oryx with straight horns - Zebra - African striped equine - Water buffalo - available at the Campbellton ranch
Exotic hunts use both spot-and-stalk and blind hunting techniques across rolling, brushy South Texas plains. All hunts include experienced guides, full lodging, and meals.
On both ranches: hog, javelina, turkey, and alligator hunts. The operation caters to hunters of all ages—families, father-son groups, couples, and hunting clubs all book trips.
J.Pat and his wife Karyn, along with their two sons Wylee and Wyatt, run the operation. You'll meet the whole family during your stay.
Meals are home-cooked and substantial: - Breakfast: Sausage, eggs, biscuits with gravy (served after morning hunts) - Lunch: Provided as sandwiches (your own schedule) - Dinner: Rib eye steaks with baked potatoes, grilled quail with all the sides, and other Texas fare (served after evening hunts)
The ranch recently completed a new lodge facility with comfortable rooming and a great room with pool table. One returning client noted he goes home "10 lbs. heavier" every trip.
Tom Ranch is registered with Texas Parks and Wildlife in their MLD (Managed Lands Deer) Program. The family's 36 years of game management experience plus 28 years of commercial hunting operations inform every decision. J.Pat focuses on herd quality—clients regularly note better antlers and larger bucks year over year.
Clientele spans the entire United States. The ranch maintains relationships with return hunters dating back to 2004-2006, and some visit almost annually.
