Capitol Area Practical Shooters

Capitol Area Practical Shooters started small—just a handful of shooters at their first match in September 2011. By their 2nd anniversary in 2013, they had grown to 76 participants. Today, CAPS runs multiple disciplines every month and has expanded to include 3-gun matches alongside their core offerings.

Caps Club hosts matches almost every weekend at Texas Shooting Academy, 300 N US Highway 183, Florence, TX 76527.

All matches are registered through Practiscore (practiscore.com/clubs/caps-club). Schedule subject to change for special events.

Steel Challenge is the fastest-paced shooting sport—timed competitions against steel targets.

Required Equipment: - 9mm, .38, or larger caliber pistol/revolver - 5 magazines or speed loaders (high capacity not needed—5-shot strings) - 150+ rounds of ammunition (minor loads requested) - Belt holster covering the trigger guard

Match Fees: - $30 (18+) - $25 CAPS Member (18+) - $20 (17 and under) - $10 additional gun fee - $10 Range Officer

Matches typically run 4-5 hours depending on participants and volunteer availability.

IDPA focuses on practical self-defense shooting with real-world scenarios. The club runs IDPA Classifier matches—standardized tests that place shooters in divisions based on current skill level so everyone competes fairly against peers. No cover garment required for classifiers.

USPSA matches run on the 4th Saturday and Sunday of each month. Check Practiscore for specific course details and fees.

A precision rifle discipline using .22 rimfire. Matches on the 3rd Saturday.

Specialty evening matches available April-October (2nd & 3rd Tuesdays) and October-April (2nd & 4th Saturdays).

CIPS takes safety seriously. At no point may you handle firearms at your vehicle. If you arrive with your carry gun loaded/holstered, a match official will escort you to a safe area to unload and show clear.

You cannot handle firearms during matches unless under direct Safety Officer supervision or in a designated safe area. If you're unsure where it is, ask.

Disqualifying offenses (immediate): - Finger on trigger when muzzle isn't pointed at berm - Muzzle of loaded gun pointed uprange - Shots striking ground within 6 feet of shooter - Any shot over the berm - General belligerence or refusal to acknowledge SO authority

Warning violations (possible DQ on second offense): - Finger on trigger during loading/reloading/unloading - Finger on trigger when gun isn't aimed at target - Failure to follow SO commands

Shooters are assigned to squads during check-in. Your squad stays together through all stages. Everyone is expected to help tape and reset targets between shooters to keep the squad on schedule. At the end of the match, shooters help break down a stage so the range can accommodate other clients in the afternoon.

Certified Range/Safety Officers and qualified Scorekeepers are club volunteers. Their job is keeping squads safe and enforcing rules consistently. Safety is everyone's responsibility—respect between SOs, scorekeepers, and participants is essential.
