Many Alaska outfitters require long open-ocean boat rides. Larsen Bay Lodge fishes minutes from the lodge in protected bays. The lodge is sheltered on Kodiak Island's southwest side—the mountain range running through the island's middle blocks 60% of precipitation that hits other parts of the island.
The 30-minute floatplane flight from Kodiak to Larsen Bay is part of the experience itself—clients describe it as one of the most spectacular flights they've experienced worldwide. You see mountain goats, Kodiak bears, Sitka blacktail deer, breaching whales, and sapphire-blue bays surrounded by rugged green mountains.
World-class saltwater and freshwater fishing for: - All five salmon species (Sockeye, Silver, Pink, Chum, King) - Halibut (near-shore protected waters) - Steelhead and Dolly Varden - Sea bass, lingcod, crab, rockfish (including yellow-eye)
High catch limits due to remote location. Recent seasons saw record harvests of Sockeye, Silver Salmon, Dollies, and thousands of pounds of halibut.
Over 200 bird species on Kodiak including Bald Eagles (200+ nesting pairs year-round), Barrow's Goldeneye, harlequin ducks, horned and tufted puffins, black-legged kittiwakes, and common murres. Marine life viewing includes whales in protected bays.
Commercial flights (June-September and October-December): - Book to Kodiak (airport code ADQ) via Alaska Airlines from Anchorage - 30-minute Island Air shuttle to Larsen Bay - Arrive Kodiak by 5:30 pm (June-September) or 2:00 pm (October-December) evening before hunting - Depart morning after last hunting day around 9:00-10:30 am
Sunday schedule: Only one flight 1:00 pm (Kodiak to Larsen Bay) and 1:30 pm (return); charter flights available at similar rates
Direct charters: Anchorage to Larsen Bay available (significantly more expensive but saves time)
The lodge makes flight arrangements unless you specify otherwise.
Prepare for weather 30-70°F in layers with waterproof outer layer. River hunting requires waders or hip boots with non-felt soles. Saltwater hunting requires rain gear and waterproof shoes. Spinning rods and tackle provided for both fresh/saltwater. Polarized sunglasses recommended for spotting and safety. Swimsuit for hot tub (summer) and sauna (year-round).
Waders and hip boots available to borrow if you provide sizes in advance.
Fishing licenses: Purchase online at Alaska Department of Fish & Game before arrival; hard copy required. King Salmon stamp recommended June-July; purchase at lodge August-December if kings are running.
Hunting tags (non-resident deer): Four items required—Annual Hunting License, Big Game Locking Tag, Big Game Tag Record, Harvest Ticket. Purchase in advance or have lodge order them.
No alcohol sold at lodge or in Larsen Bay village. Bring your own from home, ship in advance, or purchase in Kodiak (8-minute drive to liquor store from airport). Local air taxi shuttle available.
"Everything from the accommodations to the meals was outstanding...limiting on salmon and halibut while enjoying the scenery of Kodiak Island was inspiring. Our floatplane trip to the river, casting for salmon while watching the bears fish, was such a special day. Our trip was more than a vacation. It was an adventure of a lifetime." — Mike H, August 2021
