Full description and what we offer
Campbell's High Caliber Guide Service operates guided hunting and fishing expeditions across Kodiak Island, Alaska's most remote and rugged hunting destination. Owner Derrick Campbell runs cabin-based and spike-camp operations that focus on three major trophy hunts: Kodiak brown bear, mountain goat, and Sitka blacktail deer. The service also offers salmon and trout river fishing excursions, backcountry backpacking, bear viewing trips, and scenic off-road sightseeing tours.
Spring (April 1–May 15) and fall (October 25–November 30) seasons. Campbell's holds an exclusive big game guiding permit in their primary unit—a significant advantage that gives clients access to 15 miles of productive beach and every major drainage.
Kodiak brown bears are subspecies Ursus arctos middendorffi—the largest brown bear subspecies on Earth. A mature boar that survives to 15 years has endured as many as 24 hunting seasons. The hunt involves disciplined glassing, understanding bear behavior, and earning an experience in some of Alaska's most unforgiving terrain.
August 20–October 25, most hunts occur mid-October for optimal hide quality.
Kodiak's Oreamnos americanus (mountain goats) have found a sanctuary in extreme alpine terrain. High alpine overhangs, meadows, and rock faces provide both grazing and escape terrain that has allowed the population to expand significantly.
Recommended gear includes: - 15-degree sleeping bag (compression-compatible) - Lightweight insulation: synthetic or down jackets and pants - High-ankle leather hiking boots (Meindl, Kenetrek, Crispi brands recommended; break in 50+ miles before hunt) - 5,000+ cubic inch pack capacity - Merino wool base layers and heavy wool socks - 10x binoculars, headlamp, waterproof pack cover
The most economical way to hunt Kodiak Island.
