Full description and what we offer
Munsey's Bear Camp started in 1956 when Park and Pat Munsey established the operation on Kodiak Island. Today, second-generation Master Guides Mike and Bob Munsey run the outfitter with combined 45+ years of Alaskan hunting experience and deep knowledge of the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.
In Spring 2012, client Tom Stago took the 8th largest Kodiak bear ever recorded in Alaska—a 10'2" squared monster with a 30 4/16" skull. That's the largest taken in Alaska in over 30 years.
Over the past 15 years, their average harvested bear measures 9.5 feet squared. Success rate: 80% on bear hunts. Mountain goat hunts average 90% success over the past decade.
They offer fully guided spring and fall bear hunts in exclusive areas within the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge with limited permits.
Hunt Options: - Base Camp Hunt - Main lodge in North Uyak with oil heat, full bathrooms, hot showers. One hunter per hunt, personally guided by Master Guide Mike Munsey. - Coastal Hunt - Upper Uyak camp or Spiridon Bay tent-frame camps. Comfortable but no running water. Kerosene heaters included. - Interior Hunt - Wall-tent camp on small interior lake. One hunter per season (fall only). Walking hunt through Spiridon River valley with Master Guide Bob Munsey.
What a Day Looks Like: Base Camp and Coastal hunts use stable boats (Boston Whalers or aluminum skiffs) with life jackets, survival suits, and Coast Guard-certified guides. Typical day involves glassing mountainsides and river valleys from boats or beaches. Once a good bear is spotted, stalks range from simple beach walks to 30-minute to 4-hour mountain climbs. Kodiak mountains are steep, brushy, and slippery—physical conditioning directly correlates to success on bigger bears.
Spring vs. Fall: - Spring (April 21 - May 15): Nicer weather, longer days, more active bears. Hide condition less ideal; potential for rubbed bears. - Fall (Oct. 25 - Nov. 6): Tougher conditions, colder, shorter days. Prime hide condition, fat healthy bears. Salmon feeding in rivers into November. Can combo with deer or goat hunts.
Kodiak's mountain goat population has exploded in recent years. Hunts are conducted in ADF&G goat area DG480 around Uyak Bay—tough, high-altitude terrain demanding excellent physical condition.
