Full description and what we offer
Mountain Monarchs of Alaska operates out of Soldotna and specializes in remote wilderness hunts across two distinct regions of Alaska. Owner Dave Leonard came to Alaska in 1974 at age 17 and obtained his Registered Guide's License in 1981. He founded Mountain Monarchs in 1985 with his wife Suzanne and has been running it with the same energy for over 40 years.
Dave is also a commercial pilot with over 14,000 hours flying Piper Super Cubs in the Alaskan Bush—he pilots the majority of hunts himself.
Mountain Monarchs holds two Federal Guide Concessions on the Lower Alaskan Peninsula within the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge, plus adjacent State Land. This region encompasses some of the best brown bear denning habitat in the world and one of Alaska's top trophy caribou herds.
They also operate a State Land concession in the Central Brooks Range (based out of Bettles), a historic mixed-bag hunting area with minimal pressure from other guides. This remote, untouched region offers exceptional opportunities for multiple species in one hunt.
Spring Hunts: - Brown Bear
Fall Hunts: - Brown Bear - Arctic Grizzly - Dall Sheep (very limited availability) - Moose - Barren Ground Caribou
Fishing opportunities are often available during hunts, along with occasional opportunities for other game species.
"Dave Leonard's Mountain Monarchs of Alaska is a class act from start to finish! With great country on the Peninsula for brown bear and caribou; and the north for grizzly, moose, and sheep, Mountain Monarchs has it all! Hunting in Alaska is rarely easy, but with Mountain Monarchs you can count on good equipment and experienced guides…and Dave Leonard and his team make it fun." — Craig Boddington, 2017 Weatherby Award recipient
Every guide at Mountain Monarchs has been personally handpicked by Dave to ensure a high-quality experience. They prioritize two things: safety first (all decisions made with hunter well-being in mind) and stewardship (commitment to sustainable, ethical hunting practices that support future generations).
The outfitter conducts fair chase hunts in some of the world's most remote, game-rich areas. While they don't guarantee specific harvests, they maintain high success rates and guarantee the safest, most ethical, legally responsible hunting experience possible.
Hunters consistently praise the professionalism of guides like Jordan Wallace, Leopold, and others. Base camps feature quality equipment, excellent food, comfortable accommodations, and attention to every detail—from physical conditioning prep to gear recommendations to trophy care.
Testimonials highlight: - Guides who remain engaged and encouraging regardless of weather - Mentorship on rifle selection, caliber, and ammunition - Preparation advice on physical conditioning and mental readiness - Safety prioritization during Alaska's unpredictable conditions - Exceptional cooking (including accommodation for dietary restrictions)
