Arrow Five Outfitters started in 1981 and has built a reputation most outfitters never reach. Jim and TinaMarie Schaafsma own and operate the outfit from their base in Zenia, California, in the scenic coastal mountains of Northern California. They control roughly 20,000 acres leased specifically for Columbian Blacktail hunting.

These aren't marketing claims. Clients book repeatedly, and the operation produces numerous record-book blacktails every year. Most archery bucks taken qualify for Pope & Young (90+ points for Columbian Blacktail). This consistency is why serious trophy hunters plan years in advance.

The terrain dictates the method. Arrow Five's hunting area is broken country—not vast open grassland, but a mix of:

• •Timbered points
• •Steep elevation changes (400 feet at the river to 4,000 feet at the mountaintops)
• •Plenty of open country for glassing

Most hunts use the spot-and-stalk method combined with heavy glassing. This is fundamentally different from blacktail hunting in Oregon and Washington.

Late July - Early August (Archery Only) - Five days, 1x1 - Mainly tree stand or blind hunting with minimal spot-and-stalk - Excellent Pope & Young opportunity - 98% success rate

Second Week August - End of November (Trophy & Management) - Five days, 1x1 - Archery and rifle available - Mainly spot-and-stalk for archery - 100% success rate

Management Buck Hunts (Mid-September - Mid-November) - Four days, 1x1 - A management buck is a mature buck with a fork on at least one side (not counting brow tines) - 100% success rate

Youth Hunts (End of October - Mid-November) - Three days, 1x1 - 100% success rate—critical for new hunters - Five youth hunts donated annually: three to local Hunter Safety Classes, one to Bay Area MDF Banquet, one to Bay Area SCI Banquet

Both traditional and compound archers can hunt leased areas with excellent deer density and multiple opportunities per hunt.
