Hunters are transported by horseback 5-18 miles to remote base camps where you live and hunt for 3-5 days. These camps are accessible only by foot or horseback, providing genuine backcountry immersion. From base camp, daily hunting excursions stretch an additional 2-5 miles. Each day begins before dawn with strategy discussions from experienced guides.
Two hunting options: - Walk the entire trek (horses pack your gear) - Ride horseback (reduced physical strain, covers more territory)
Daily hikes require you to walk at least 5-8 miles in steep, rugged terrain. Physical fitness is essential—the wilderness demands stamina and endurance to succeed.
Columbia blacktail deer are found in only three U.S. regions. The Northern California wilderness here offers exceptional opportunities for both novice and experienced hunters. Guides use expert glassing techniques to locate deer and position you for the perfect shot.
2026 Season Dates: - Archery: Beginning in August - General Season: Beginning in September
Tags are available over-the-counter on a first-come, first-served basis.
Quality black bears hunt the same areas as the deer. Using remote camps and expert glassing, guides spot bears in their natural habitat and plan precise approaches considering weapon range, wind direction, and terrain.
2026 Season Dates: - Archery: Beginning in September - General Season: Beginning in September
Bear tags are also available over-the-counter.
Hunt Columbia blacktail deer and black bear on the same trip, depending on season and tag availability. This offers a comprehensive backcountry hunting experience in the Trinity Alps Wilderness.

Backcountry Guided Hunts coordinates taxidermy on your behalf and arranges for trophy shipment to you for an additional fee.
Beyond hunting season, drop camping is available for fishing and hiking trips. Guides transport you into remote backcountry, establish base camp, and return days later for pickup—offering self-sufficient wilderness experience.
Horse trekking reduces physical strain on joints and increases the range of territory you can cover. This allows deeper penetration into remote, less-accessible wilderness while keeping focus on the hunting experience itself. The method connects you to the history and tradition of backcountry hunting—a serene, timeless journey through rugged landscapes.
The Northern California wilderness is home to over 600 miles of pristine streams and over 50 alpine lakes, making it a paradise for hunters, anglers, and nature lovers.
