BSA Troop 722

Scouts BSA Troop 722 and Troop 2722 operate together as a unified youth leadership organization in Castro Valley, California. Both troops meet Thursdays at 7:30pm and focus on outdoor skills, merit badge advancement, and community service.

Both troops organize regular camping expeditions throughout Northern California:

• •Lassen Volcanic National Park - Annual multi-day campout exploring geothermal features, 150+ miles of hiking trails, wildlife viewing (black bears, mule deer)
• •Death Valley & Joshua Tree National Parks - Week-long tent camping expeditions
• •Angel Island - Overnight backpacking trips
• •Coyote Hills Regional Park - Local advancement-focused campouts with skill-building focus
• •Lake Del Valle Recreation Area - Tent camping experiences
• •Camp Royaneh - 7-day summer camp (celebrated 100 years in 2025)
• •High Sierra - 7-day summer camp program
• •Quarry Park - Rock climbing and ropes adventure training
• •Tres Ranchos Camporee - Multi-troop camping events

Scouts work toward rank advancement through merit badge completion and skill demonstrations. Recent Court of Honor results show:

In September 2025 alone, scouts earned 314 merit badges, with 37 scouts advancing in rank and 44 special awards achieved—including camping-nights neckerchief slides and the Mile Swim.

Younger scouts (under First Class rank) focus on essential skills with mentorship from experienced scouts using the EDGE method (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, Enable).

Both troops have produced multiple Eagle Scouts in recent years:

• •Ronan Wilfong - Eagle Scout, freshman at Castro Valley High School. His Eagle project created a native garden with interpretive signage at the Castro Valley Library's Sage Park entrance.
• •Ryland Truong - Eagle Scout. Historical park trail restoration project.
• •Ethan Ng - Eagle Scout (Court of Honor held September 6, 2025 at Bonaire Park, San Leandro)
• •Avi Rajbhandary - Eagle Scout (January 2025)

Reaching Eagle Scout requires mastery of numerous merit badges, leadership demonstration, and completion of a significant service project benefiting the community.

Both troops run seasonal fundraisers that teach business skills and generate funds for activities:

• •Christmas Tree Sales - Annual holiday tradition at 19201 Center Street (corner of Center Street and Heyer Street). Scouts and families work together unpacking and selling fresh trees. All proceeds directly fund high-adventure trips and essential gear.

• •Mistletoe Sales - Annual holiday fundraiser where scouts pick fresh mistletoe from host plants, trim and bag it, then sell at local businesses throughout the weekend. The process teaches teamwork, business skills, and the value of hard work while generating crucial funding.

• •Garage & Hot Dog Sales - Additional fundraising events throughout the year.

The troops emphasize strong adult mentorship:

• •Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters (ASMs) providing direct instruction
• •Merit Badge Counselors specializing in specific badge areas
• •Volunteer family members supporting campouts, fundraisers, and advancement
• •Ongoing adult training through Scoutbook and summer camp programs

Older scouts working toward Life rank and beyond focus on the EDGE method, teaching and mentoring younger scouts to:

• •Master camp cooking
• •Build wilderness survival skills
• •Develop outdoor leadership capabilities

Both troops celebrated significant anniversaries in 2025:

Memorial donations in honor of community members like David Dunlap support ongoing operations and activities.
