Full description and what we offer

Sierra Crest Outfitters is a licensed, bonded, and permitted hunting guide service founded by Josh Schulgen, a lifelong Tehachapi resident who turned his passion for the outdoors into a full-time operation. Since 2015, SCO has guided hunters through California's most exclusive big game opportunities with a 100% opportunity rate on all species.

  • Mule Deer - SCO guides premium units across California with access to older age-class bucks and trophy potential. Their track record includes bucks grossing 180+ inches. They can arrange hunts on public or private land, with late-season hunts proving especially productive.
  • Tule Elk - California is the only state offering Tule Elk hunts. SCO guides all units in the state, with particular success in the Owens Valley range where symmetrical bulls consistently score well.
  • Rocky Mountain Elk - The Tehachapi unit is their specialty. With over 20,000 acres of combined private ranch access and trophy bulls scoring 350-400+ inches, SCO has documented 405, 385, 375, and 425-inch bulls in recent seasons. The team has lived in Tehachapi their entire lives and have patterned world-class bulls for years.
  • Desert Bighorn Sheep - SCO guides all 10 sheep zones across California, from 13,000-foot peaks to remote southern desert canyons. They maintain a 100% success opportunity on legal rams and specialize in multiple zones:
  • Zone 1: Marble/Clipper Mountains
  • Zone 2: Kelso Peak/Old Dad Mountains
  • Zone 3: Clark/Kingston Mountains
  • Zone 4: Orocopia Mountains
  • Zone 5: San Gorgonio Mountains
  • Zone 6: Sheep Hole Mountains
  • Zone 7: White Mountains (Periods 1 & 2)
  • Zone 8: South Bristol Mountains
  • Zone 9: Cady Mountains
  • Zone 10: Newberry/Rodman & Ord Mountains (Periods 1 & 2)

Josh Schulgen, founder and owner, has been hunting since age 5 and guiding professionally since 2015. Despite managing 300+ wind turbines in his day job, he prioritizes hunting season every year. His network includes past clients who've become lifelong friends—a testament to the quality of his operations.

SCO's success speaks through their client stories: 77-year-old John Olson finally drew his dream Tehachapi unit after applying for decades and tagged a bull on opening day. Justin Barnes waited a year to hunt "Hook," a 400-inch 6x6 that had eluded hunters before finally harvesting him as a 425-inch giant.

  • Statewide Access: Licensed and permitted across all premium California units
  • Private Land: 20,000+ acres of combined ranch access in key regions
  • Lifetime Local Knowledge: Multi-decade familiarity with Tehachapi range and California's hunting zones
  • 100% Opportunity Rate: Documented success on all species
  • Pre-Season Scouting: Built into most packages
  • Family Operation: Josh's father Dave and guides Jake Berry, Jake Snyder, and others bring deep experience
