Northern Firearms Instruction (NFI) started in 2007 under Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko and expanded to become the most prolific firearms instruction company in California. They now teach CCW courses in over 50 California counties and cities, from Alameda to Yuba.
CCW Classes - Most popular offering. County curriculum varies (most require minimum 8 hours). Includes classroom law discussion and mandated range qualification with every firearm on your permit. Available at multiple locations: - Redding, Burney, Chico, Fairfield, Fresno, Rancho Cordova, Rocklin (two locations), Rohnert Park, Vacaville, Weaverville
CCW Renewal Classes - Two renewal paths: standard classroom plus range qualification, or advanced options like NFI Skill Builder or Tactical Defensive Handgun Course (limited areas). NFI offers free add-a-gun qualifications between classes for permit holders adding firearms.
Ladies Only Courses - Running 8+ years. Three components: - Basic Pistol Safety (revolver and semi-automatic pistols) - CCW Laws (legal details, ethical responsibilities, 2nd Amendment history) - Range Training (comprehensive 100-cartridge qualification)
Range packing list: firearm, 100 cartridges, closed-toed shoes, hand towel, eye/ear protection. Training fees include range and target fees.
Hunter's Education - Two-step process: 1. Complete authorized online CA hunter's education course OR student workbook (available free at Sportsman's Warehouse locations) 2. Attend in-person class ($20 fee, cash/check only)
Students take 100-question test, must pass 80% for CA Hunter's Education Certification. Classes held throughout Northern California.
Basic Rifle & Pistol Training - 8-hour courses for new shooters covering firearm action types, calibers, safe use, and basic personal protection. You can bring your own or use NFI firearms. Taught in Redding, Red Bluff, Rocklin, Stockton, Rancho Cucamonga, and Rancho Cordova.
NRA Instructor Courses - Train to teach. NFI credentialed trainers offer: - NRA Basic Pistol - NRA Basic Rifle - NRA Basic Shotgun - NRA Personal Protection in the Home - NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home - NRA Chief Range Safety Officer (CRSO)
Private Instruction - Four-hour custom sessions at your location or theirs. Set up family safety courses or specialized curriculum. Fees based on student count and curriculum type.
100% NRA-credentialed instructors. Period.
Credentials required: - CA CCW, NRA Pistol, NRA Personal Instructor, DOJ Firearms Instructor, NRA Multi-Disciplined, NRA CRSO Firearms Instructor certifications - Annual testing for firearms law AND firearms proficiency - Many are US military veterans or prior law enforcement - Hand-picked based on experience and current credentials - Strict instructor-to-student ratio for quality control
NFI maintains private ranges and private classrooms throughout California.
Note: Shasta County and many others require CCW permit application within 60 days of course completion certificate. Beyond that window may require update class for fresh certificate.
