Full description and what we offer
Feather Dog Outfitters operates out of Sonoma County, California, and is run by Captain Gregg Holland—a guide who literally grew up on a tidal marsh on San Francisco Bay. He got his first skiff at ten years old and has been hunting and fishing Northern California for over four decades. His father was a waterman who operated tugs and ferries on the SF Bay, and that water culture runs deep.
Gregg holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master 25 ton captain's license (USCG #4321870) and a California Department of Fish and Wildlife guide license (DFW #1005320854). He's raised four daughters who all share the family passion for the outdoors, and he volunteers with at-risk youth and Project Healing Waters.
One of the few charter boats offering quiet, intimate drifts for King Salmon on steelhead rods. Mooching—not trolling—lets you actually connect with the ocean instead of racing around. If you want to learn the technique and experience salmon fishing the right way, this is it.
Shallow water light gear fishing is a core passion. Forget heavy rods—Feather Dog uses light inshore rods and swim baits to target fish that rarely see anglers. If you're a freshwater bass fisherman, you'll love flipping jigs for huge rockfish or ripping stick baits for stripers. The fish are bigger than you'd expect, and the experience is way more fun than standard charter boat fishing.
Species targeted: - Striped Bass - Halibut - Rockfish - Sharks - Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass (inland) - Steelhead (rivers and inland waters)
Get ready for fast and furious action. If you've never done layout hunting for sea ducks, this is the experience. Feather Dog uses The Revolution—a new 2-man layout boat that sits less than 12" off the water. You'll be anchored in the decoys just a few yards from ducks landing in your spread. You'll see Canvasbacks, Bluebills, Scooters, and Goldeneyes coming in at 65+ mph.
Gregg uses a mixture of Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO) baitcasting and spinning rods depending on the situation and angler preference. All rods are fitted with Shimano reels, and he's equipped all casting rods with the new Shimano Tranx baitcasters. Lures and hardware are provided on all charters.
Fly fishing trips feature top-of-the-line rods and a variety of integrated sink-tips. If you forget gear or show up unprepared, he has you covered.
"Over the years I have fished with most of the guides from many outfits in our area, but the Captain is head and shoulders above the rest." — Riley Johnson, Fall 2017
For your convenience, Feather Dog offers San Francisco waterfront pickup. Instead of driving to a remote marina, Gregg will meet you in central SF. Pickup locations can change based on weather and conditions, so you confirm the night before your charter.
