Location details and information
Tulsa Shooting Team develops young shooters through competitive action shooting. Their season runs October through July with Saturday morning practices at United States Shooting Academy. Competitors enter through SCSA (Steel Challenge Shooting Association) and SASP (Scholastic Action Shooting Program), competing locally and traveling to out-of-state matches.
- •Pistol: Ages 12+
- •Rifle: No minimum age (shooter must be strong enough to support the rifle)
- •Team cost: $160/season
Shooters cover their own competition fees, firearms, ammunition, and eye/ear protection. The team provides ammo for practice sessions.
- •Why rimfire? Lower cost, minimal recoil, and perfect for younger shooters learning fundamentals.
Pistol (5.5" minimum barrel): - Browning Buck Mark - Smith & Wesson SW22 Victory - Ruger Mark IV
No compensators, ported barrels, muzzle brakes, or sighting systems (scopes, red dots, lasers) on handguns.
Rifle (semi-auto .22 LR, detachable magazine): - Ruger 10/22 (most common)
Competitors can shoot iron sights or red dot divisions. New shooters typically start with iron sights to build grip, stance, breathing, and trigger control before moving to optics.
Head Coach Darrell - NRA Certified Level 1 coach since 2014. Team has competed at Nationals nearly every year. Rifle team took 3rd place in 2021.
Coach Brent - 50+ years in law enforcement including 18 years with Oklahoma Department of Corrections and 12 years with Pittsburg County Sheriff's Office. Competed in civilian and police pistol matches 1985-1997.
Coach Jack - 15 years in gunsmithing, Army-qualified Expert shooter, formerly C.L.E.E.T certified. Specializes in youth safety and shooting instruction.
Coach Brian - 40+ years shooting experience, 25 years Army Infantry (EIB/CIB), 22+ years law enforcement, Range Master certified.
Coach Drew & Coach John - Parents and former competitors assisting the program.

Five magazines for pistol and rifle are required for all competitions. Academy, Bass Pro, and Security Centers Inc. in Catoosa are recommended retailers.

- •Youth must be minimum 12 years old for pistol (no minimum for rifle but must be physically capable)
- •Pistols must have barrel length of at least 5.5 inches
- •No compensators, ported barrels, muzzle brakes, or barrel weights on pistols
- •No scopes, red-dot, or laser systems permitted on handguns
- •Tubular magazine rifles not permitted
- •Only .22 LR rimfire ammunition for competitions
