Full description and what we offer
Gary Herbert's New Zealand Hunting has been operating since 1995, built on a straightforward philosophy: treat hunters the way you'd want to be treated. The operation is owned and operated by Gary Herbert and his wife Louise, and it's backed by genuine expertise—Gary received the prestigious SCI International Professional Hunter of the Year Award in 2006.
Unlike most New Zealand outfitters stuck with a single property, Gary Herbert's operation owns one ranch outright in the heart of the Southern Alps and leases three others. This means they hunt across multiple properties with high densities of red stag, tahr, chamois, fallow, wapiti, and whitetail—allowing guides to be selective about trophy quality rather than forced to take the first animal spotted.
"We own our own hunting area in the heart of the Southern Alps, located in one of the best areas in New Zealand for Red Stag, Tahr, Chamois, Fallow and Wapiti."
Every hunter is different. That's why all hunts are custom-designed:
Guides are among the most experienced in the South Pacific. During the Southern Hemisphere off-season (mid-August to December), most guides travel to North America to guide hunters in the States and British Columbia. Gary himself has guided over 200 successful hunters in New Zealand and has experience with Marco Polo sheep in Kyrgyzstan, bighorn sheep in Colorado, and hunts across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Few outfitters offer what Gary Herbert's does: a full refund if you don't get at least one shooting opportunity at your target game, or if guides, organization, or lodging fall short. This policy reflects confidence in their operation.
The operation includes a luxury hunting lodge with food service, detailed pre-hunt planning, and support for firearm importation into New Zealand. Past clients are available for reference—Gary encourages calling them directly.
Gary is a life member of SCI, member of FNAWS (Foundation for North American Wild Sheep), and involved with the Grand Slam Club, Mule Deer Foundation, and other wildlife organizations.
